The Senior Centre of Telde hosted a day on prevention and safety led by a firefighter. The councillor for Social Services highlighted the importance of training for the autonomy of the elderly.

About thirty elderly people from the municipality of Telde participated in a practical session on how to avoid accidents at home and react to emergencies. The initiative, held at the Senior Centre, was conducted by Rogelio Rodríguez Vega, a firefighter from the Fire Extinction Service, who provided specific guidelines for identifying everyday risks.

During the session, the firefighter explained how to prevent falls, poisoning, or fires, three of the most common incidents at home among the elderly population. He also taught basic maneuvers such as the recovery position and the emergency number 112, which many did not know how to dial from a mobile phone.

Training to gain autonomy

The councillor for Social Services, Adela Álvarez, attended the meeting and emphasized that “information and prevention are fundamental tools to improve the quality of life for our elderly.” She added that such actions “provide them with useful knowledge to act with greater safety and peace of mind in any risky situation.”

Álvarez thanked Rodríguez Vega for his engagement, as he managed to connect with the audience using clear language and everyday examples. The session included a Q&A segment where attendees shared their own experiences and questions, from what to do if a frying pan catches fire to how to check smoke detectors.

More activities in progress

The Social Services Department has announced that they will continue organising training workshops throughout the year. The goal is for the elderly in the municipality to maintain their independence for as long as possible, reducing risks in their immediate environment. The next talk, with no date yet, will focus on healthy eating and preventing dehydration in summer.

Attendees rated the initiative very positively. “It never hurts to remind ourselves of these things, because one gets complacent and then what happens, happens,” commented one of the participants as she left. The Senior Centre of Telde, under the Town Hall, will resume its autumn programming with more proposals tailored to this group.
