The Cabildo of La Gomera allocates 722,000 euros to the fourth edition of the New Employment Opportunities programme, starting this July 1, benefiting 14 qualified young people with profiles such as nursing assistants, psychologists, or agricultural engineers.

Since this Tuesday, July 1, the Cabildo of La Gomera has launched the fourth edition of the New Employment Opportunities (NOE) programme, an initiative aimed at facilitating the labour insertion of qualified young people through their incorporation into the island's public administration. The investment amounts to 722,000 euros, financed by the Canary Islands Development Fund.

The 14 selected young people come from highly sought-after profiles on the island: nursing and geriatric assistants, higher technicians in administration and finance, early childhood educators, psychologists, agricultural engineers, and law graduates. All of them will begin their professional journey in different areas of the Cabildo, developing functions related to their qualifications.

A gateway to the labour market

The president of the Cabildo, Casimiro Curbelo, highlighted that the programme “has consolidated itself as a useful tool within the active employment policies of the island institution, as it allows trained young people to access their first professional experience in their homeland.” He emphasised that the NOE “opens a first door to the labour market for trained young people while reinforcing the public services of the island.”

Curbelo recalled that, with this new edition, the programme has accumulated an investment close to 2.9 million euros and a total of 74 young beneficiaries across its four editions. “We are talking about real opportunities, practical training, and professional support so that those who have completed their studies can improve their employability and, at the same time, contribute to the functioning of the island's administration,” he stated.

La Gomera, with the lowest youth unemployment rate in the Canary Islands

The NOE programme allows participants to gain practical experience in strategic sectors for the island, such as social services, the primary sector, sustainability, or public management. Curbelo stressed that “La Gomera has managed to maintain youth unemployment indicators below the regional average,” with a rate of 4.77%, compared to 5.3% in the Canary Islands. “These figures demonstrate that active employment policies have an impact when planned with continuity, resources, and addressing the real needs of the population,” he added.

For the island's youth, this initiative represents a real opportunity to stay and work in their homeland without having to emigrate. The contracts, which are temporary in nature, are part of a broader strategy by the Cabildo to combat youth unemployment and retain the population in the territory.

More employment for those over 60

The start of this new edition of the NOE coincides with other employment initiatives promoted by the Cabildo, including the employability programme for people over 60, which includes 155 job positions and an investment of 3.4 million euros. “The Cabildo continues to bet on policies that generate opportunities at all stages of working life,” concluded Curbelo.

The NOE programme will be developed over the coming months, and the selected young people have already been informed of their placements. The bases for future calls will be published on the Cabildo's notice board and on its website.
