The Cabildo of La Gomera has carried out new actions on the Colombina Route, with an investment of over 1.3 million euros funded by Next Generation EU funds. The works include signage, murals, monuments, and an augmented reality app.
The president of the Cabildo of La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, highlighted that the Colombina Route "represents an opportunity to continue projecting the history of La Gomera with rigor, respect for heritage, and the improvement of public spaces." The island institution has allocated over 1.3 million euros to this initiative, which aims to enhance the historical heritage linked to Christopher Columbus's passage through the island.
Signage and murals in the historic centre
Among the actions already executed is the installation and renewal of tourist and heritage signage, which identifies buildings, sites, and spaces along the route. Two pictorial murals have also been created on Calle García Cabrera and Calle de La Hila, recreating the historical context of Columbus's passage through San Sebastián de La Gomera.
The first vice president of the Cabildo and island councillor for Heritage, Adasat Reyes, explained that "the actions have been conceived from a comprehensive perspective, combining the improvement of heritage interpretation, the renewal of urban elements, and the incorporation of digital resources."
Monuments and musealisation
The project has included the creation of two monuments. The ‘Rebellion of the Gomeros’ Monument, at the viewpoint of Degollada de Peraza, commemorates a significant historical episode of the island. The ‘The Ships of Discovery’ Monument, at the roundabout of the Municipal Market, commemorates the vessels that arrived in the Gomera bay.
Additionally, the musealisation of the Customs House has been promoted, along with the creation of an augmented reality mobile application, which will enrich the visit with interpretative content. Technical projects have also been drafted for the musealisation of Casa Colón and Torre del Conde, which the Cabildo will execute with its own funds.
European funds for sustainable tourism
The initiative is funded by Next Generation EU funds, through the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan. These aids are aimed at modernising and enhancing the competitiveness of the tourism sector, as well as transforming towards sustainability.
For the residents of San Sebastián de La Gomera, these improvements represent a revitalisation of the historic centre, with a standardisation of urban furniture on Avenida Marítima and the undergrounding of the electrical wiring on Calle Real, which will enhance the landscape and heritage quality of the surroundings.
The actions are already visible in the historic centre, and the ongoing technical projects will allow the strategy to continue in the coming months. The Cabildo expects the augmented reality app to be operational before the end of the year, providing residents and tourists with an immersive experience of the island's Columbian history.
