The Canary Islands Government has tendered the works to convert the old Municipal Fish Market of Arrecife into a gastronomic market. The project, with a budget of €466,601.50, will include restoration, tasting, and a terrace.

The Department of Tourism and Employment of the Canary Islands Government, through Gesprotur, has published the tender to rehabilitate the old Municipal Fish Market of Arrecife and turn it into a gastronomic market. The base budget amounts to €466,601.50 and interested companies have until 21 July to submit their bids.

A space for residents and tourists

The project, developed by the Arrecife City Council, includes the creation of dining and tasting areas, an equipped kitchen, adapted services, and a rooftop terrace. The aim is for the building to become a meeting point for both locals and visitors to the island.

The CEO of Gesprotur, Ignacio Solana, has stated that this initiative aims to diversify the tourist offer of Lanzarote. “Recovering spaces with heritage value like the old Fish Market allows for the creation of new meeting places that enrich the experience of citizens and tourists,” he affirmed.

Strategic location and sustainability

The property is located on Avenida Vargas, next to the waterfront and the administrative area of the capital. The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, has expressed gratitude for the collaboration of the regional government and highlighted that the works will modernize the building and facilitate its reopening as a Market of Abastos, including a gastronomic area that will energize that part of the city.

The project incorporates universal accessibility and energy efficiency criteria, aligning with the sustainability objectives of the Canary Government. With this intervention, it is expected that the historic Fish Market will regain its activity as a gastronomic reference in Arrecife.

For the residents of Arrecife, the transformation will mean having a new leisure and shopping space in the centre, while tourists will have another attraction in the island's offerings. The rooftop terrace, with sea views, promises to be one of the highlights of the future market.

The deadline for submitting bids ends on 21 July at 23:59 through the Public Sector Contracting Platform. The works, once awarded, will last several months, although a specific start date has not yet been set.
