The former president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and former mayor of Puerto del Rosario will head the list of Municipalistas Primero Canarias in the Gran Canaria capital for the 2027 elections. The designation was made unanimously at the party's local assembly.
The former president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and former mayor of Puerto del Rosario, Marcial Morales, has been unanimously designated as the candidate of Municipalistas Primero Canarias for the mayoralty of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the 2027 elections. The announcement was made during the local assembly of the party held this Tuesday and will be formalised this Wednesday at the party's headquarters.
A solid political career
Morales, a native of Tuineje (Fuerteventura) and born in 1958, has extensive experience in Canary Islands politics. He was president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura from 2015 to 2019, and prior to that, he served as mayor of Puerto del Rosario for a decade, from 2005 to 2015. He also held the position of councillor for Employment and Social Affairs in the Canary Islands Government from 1999 to 2003.
Currently, Morales is a trustee of the Fundación Canaria Yrichen, an entity that works with families at risk of social exclusion. Additionally, he has worked as a social educator at the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and as a teacher at the Labour University of Las Palmas.
The electoral context in the Gran Canaria capital
The Primero Canarias candidacy is the second to be confirmed for the mayoralty of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. A week ago, the Popular Party outlined Poli Suárez, the current councillor for Education in the Canary Islands Government, as its candidate to reclaim the capital. The formalisation of the popular candidacy is scheduled for 18 July in Santiago de Compostela.
Morales has been residing in the Gran Canaria capital for four years, following his retirement as a teacher, which has allowed him to gain firsthand knowledge of the city's reality. In recent weeks, his presence at the party's institutional events had generated speculation about his possible candidacy.
A party seeking the Canary vote
On 14 June, Morales attended the first meeting of members and supporters of Primero Canarias at La Karpa in Vecindario, where the party leadership called for "the Canary vote" for the upcoming elections, under slogans of "strength, cohesion, and unity." The event gathered around two thousand people.
For the residents of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, this candidacy represents a new political option for 2027, in a landscape where the current mayor, Augusto Hidalgo (PSOE), has yet to confirm whether he will seek re-election. The race for the mayoralty is shaping up with at least two clear contenders, and it is expected that other parties will join in the coming months.
The formal designation of Morales will be made this Wednesday at the party's headquarters in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where the candidate is expected to make his first statements following the appointment.
