The Cabildo of La Palma supports the second edition of the Benahoare League, a grassroots football tournament that will take place from July 9 to 12 in Los Llanos de Aridane. 15 teams and around 160 boys and girls from the Benjamin, Alevin, and Infantil categories are participating.
The Juan Pablo II square in Los Llanos de Aridane will become a large football field from July 9 to 12. There, 15 teams and around 160 boys and girls will compete in the second edition of the Benahoare League, a tournament that aims to revive the spirit of street football.
The initiative is supported by the Cabildo of La Palma and the Town Hall of Los Llanos de Aridane. Present at the launch were the island's Sports Councillor, Yurguen Hernández; the Sports Councillor, Víctor González; the organisers Zavan Isidro and José Gregorio Díaz; and the manager of the Trocadero Shopping Centre, Alejandra Salamanca.
A Unique Regulation to Promote Team Play
The Benahoare League is not a conventional tournament. It has its own regulations, designed to encourage teamwork and move away from traditional competition. According to Yurguen Hernández, it aims to “recover street sports” with “rules and alternatives that are completely different from what we are used to.”
The councillor recalled that the first edition was a success, with all registrations filled. “We hope this second edition will receive the same warm welcome,” he stated.
The tournament is aimed at the Benjamin, Alevin, and Infantil categories. The matches will be played in an environment that seeks to give children the experience of playing in the street, without the pressure of results.
A Nod to Women's Football and the Hope to Establish It
This edition introduces a novelty: a nod to women's football. Organiser Zavan Isidro explained that the initiative was born with the intention of “revolutionising current football,” encouraging boys and girls to reconnect and play in the street. He also expressed his desire to establish the Benahoare League as a regular event in the island's calendar.
Councillor Víctor González thanked all the collaborating entities for their involvement. “This tournament reminds us of the football we experienced when we were young, with fun rules and a different way of understanding the sport,” he said. He encouraged the public to come to the Juan Pablo II square to enjoy the event.
The second edition was initially scheduled for December but had to be postponed due to the storm that affected the island. It will now take place in summer, allowing for good weather.
For the residents of Los Llanos de Aridane and all of La Palma, the Benahoare League is an opportunity to see different football, in an urban setting and with a family atmosphere. Admission is free, so just come to the square and be surprised.
