The Cabildo of Lanzarote has put out to tender the drafting of the Modernisation Plan for Playa Blanca and the third for Costa Teguise, with a budget of 600,000 euros. The work includes technical, legal, and environmental studies to update the management of both tourist areas.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa have tendered for the drafting of two key instruments for the renewal of the island's main tourist destinations: the Modernisation, Improvement and Increase of Tourist Competitiveness Plan for Playa Blanca and the Third Modernisation Plan for Costa Teguise. The total investment amounts to 600,000 euros and the contracting is carried out through an open procedure and urgent processing.
This initiative represents a step forward after completing the prior administrative processing and formalising the management assignment with the Government of the Canary Islands. The Cabildo assumes the technical direction of both territorial planning processes, while the Ministry of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Water of the Government of the Canary Islands will be responsible for the processing and final approval of the documents.
The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, emphasised that this tender “means turning into reality the work developed over the past few months between the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands to provide Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise with management instruments adapted to the current reality.” Betancort added that “we are entering a decisive phase. We are no longer talking about administrative procedures, but the beginning of the drafting of documents that will define how we want Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise to evolve in the coming years.”
For his part, the councillor for Territorial Planning and Territorial Policy, Jesús Machín, explained that the tender will allow for the formation of specialised multidisciplinary teams that will develop both plans over the coming months. “Now the technical work begins. We want to have specialised teams that develop two robust plans from an urban, environmental, and economic perspective, incorporating solutions that improve public spaces, mobility, tourist activity, and urban quality in both areas,” Machín indicated.
The specifications include the complete drafting of both plans, including all necessary technical, legal, economic, and environmental studies, as well as technical assistance throughout the administrative processing. In the case of Playa Blanca, the document must previously define the scope of action considering the legal and urban situation of the municipality to ensure the viability of the proposals.
The new Modernisation Plans aim to update the management of both tourist areas, promote the renewal of accommodation establishments and complementary offerings, improve public spaces, strengthen infrastructure and facilities, promote sustainable mobility, and consolidate a higher quality and more competitive tourism model. In Playa Blanca, additionally, the new document will provide an urban instrument adapted to the current regulatory framework following the partial annulment of the previous planning.
The tender is part of the strategy of the Cabildo of Lanzarote to modernise its tourist destinations and adapt them to current demands for sustainability and quality. The plans seek to address the challenges of the sector, such as the need to renew obsolete infrastructure and improve the visitor experience, without losing sight of the conservation of the natural environment.
The deadline for submitting offers is now open, and it is expected that the awarded teams will begin work in the coming months. The urgent processing responds to the desire to expedite instruments that have been pending for some time and are considered a priority for the island's tourist development.
