A 4-year-old girl of French nationality has died this Sunday after drowning in the pool of a hotel in Puerto del Carmen, Tías. Despite the resuscitation efforts by the lifeguard and medical teams, her life could not be saved.
A four-year-old girl, of French nationality, lost her life this Sunday after drowning in the pool of a hotel complex in Puerto del Carmen, in the municipality of Tías. The girl was on holiday in Lanzarote with her parents and grandparents when the tragedy occurred.
The Emergency and Security Coordinating Centre (CECOES) 112 received the alert at 16:48, reporting that a child was in cardiac arrest in the water. A Basic Life Support ambulance and a medicalised ambulance from the Canary Emergency Service (SUC) were dispatched to the scene.
Unsuccessful Resuscitation
Before the medical personnel arrived, the hotel lifeguard began cardiopulmonary resuscitation and used a semi-automatic external defibrillator (AED). Upon arrival, the SUC staff continued advanced resuscitation for approximately an hour, but the doctor confirmed the death as they could not reverse the cardiac arrest.
The circumstances of the drowning are still unknown: it is unclear how long the girl may have been in the water before being located. The investigation is in the hands of the Civil Guard, which is trying to clarify what happened.
Third Serious Water Accident in Weeks
This incident once again highlights the safety of hotel pools on the island. Last June, a child died from drowning in the pool of a hotel in Playa Blanca, in Yaiza. Days earlier, another girl was rescued in critical condition from the pool of a tourist complex in Puerto del Carmen, managing to be stabilised and transferred to a hospital.
For tourists and residents, the recurrence of these incidents raises concern. Authorities remind the importance of constant supervision of minors in the water, even when a lifeguard is present. Hotels in the area usually have surveillance staff, but quick action is not always sufficient.
The family of the girl has received psychological support at the scene, while the hotel collaborates with the investigation. More details about the causes of the drowning are expected to be revealed in the coming days.
