The State Meteorological Agency forecasts temperatures of up to 35 degrees this Sunday in the highlands and midlands of Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, with light calima and clear skies across most of the archipelago.
The thermometer will not relent this Sunday in the Canary Islands. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has announced a day of intense heat, with maximums that could reach 35 degrees in specific areas of Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura. The calima, although light, will also make an appearance at altitude, according to the official forecast.
Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, the hottest spots
In Gran Canaria, temperatures will rise sharply in the midlands facing southeast, south, and west. The Tejeda basin will be one of the most affected areas, where thermometers will hover around 34 or 35 degrees. In Fuerteventura, the heat will be intense in the southern inland areas, with maximums of up to 34 degrees. In the capital of Fuerteventura, Puerto del Rosario, a minimum of 22 degrees and a maximum of 30 is expected.
In the rest of the islands, temperatures will also exceed 30 degrees in large inland areas, except in La Palma and El Hierro, where the likelihood of reaching that figure is lower. Aemet indicates that the thermal rise will be light to moderate, but more notable in the mountainous islands.
Clear skies and light calima
Sunday will start with generally few clouds or clear skies, although cloudy intervals are expected in the low northern areas of the islands during the early and late hours of the day. The calima, while present at altitude, will not be as dense as in other episodes, but will be enough for the sky to appear somewhat hazy, especially in Tenerife during the afternoon.
In Lanzarote, the southern and eastern coastline will register maximums of 30 to 32 degrees, with Arrecife recording a minimum of 22 and a maximum of 31. In Tenerife, low clouds will appear in the north at the beginning and end of the day, but in the midlands of the east, south, and west, temperatures will exceed 30 degrees. La Gomera will also experience a hot day, with temperatures surpassing 30 degrees in the midlands and high areas.
North wind and background sea
The wind will blow from the moderate northern component, with strong intervals during the night in Jandía (Fuerteventura) and on the eastern and western coasts of the mountainous islands. At sea, a north or northwest wind is expected, with slight swells increasing to moderate swells. Additionally, there will be a background sea from the north of around one metre, which will decrease throughout the day.
For residents and visitors, the recommendation is clear: constant hydration, avoiding the central hours of the day, and protecting oneself from the sun. Authorities remind that the heat can be especially intense in the midlands, where the air is drier and the thermal sensation increases. Those with outdoor plans are better off seeking them early in the morning or at sunset.
