The Canary Islands Government has declared the end of the heat pre-alert in Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife since 20:00 hours on Saturday. However, Aemet maintains yellow warnings for wind and coastal phenomena on several islands.
The Canary Islands Government, through the General Directorate of Emergencies, has decided to end the pre-alert for maximum temperatures that affected Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife. The measure, which had been in place for several days under the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands for Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA), was lifted as of 20:00 hours on Saturday, July 25.
The decision was made after confirming the end of the meteorological conditions that justified the activation, according to reports from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). With the deactivation, the preventive restrictions that were in effect in the southern half of Fuerteventura, the east, south, west, and summits of Gran Canaria, as well as in the south of the metropolitan area and southern areas of Tenerife, are lifted.
However, the weather does not relent this Sunday. Aemet maintains multiple yellow warnings for strong gusts of wind of up to 80 km/h and for coastal phenomena that will affect almost the entire archipelago. The trade winds will blow with particular intensity in exposed slopes and channels between islands.
Temperature drop and light haze
The thermometers will begin a clear drop in mid-altitudes, summits, and low areas facing south. For Sunday, maximum temperatures will be around 29 degrees in Tenerife and Lanzarote, while nighttime minimums will drop to 19 degrees in El Hierro and 22 degrees in Fuerteventura.
Additionally, light haze is expected at high levels in the eastern province, which could slightly reduce visibility in some areas.
Warnings for wind and waves
The meteorological risk shifts to wind this Sunday. Aemet warns of maximum gusts of 70 km/h in the low areas of the southeast and northwest of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, El Hierro, and the southern half of Lanzarote. The gusts will be even more severe in La Gomera, where the trade winds could exceed 80 km/h in the southeast and northwest slopes.
Regarding the state of the sea, the yellow warning for coastal phenomena will be active in La Gomera, El Hierro, the west of La Palma, as well as in the east, south, and west slopes of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Northeasterly winds of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7) are expected, particularly affecting the channel between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, La Gomera, and the southeast of La Palma.
Light drizzles and cloudy skies
The general forecast for this Sunday includes a predominance of cloudy skies or cloudy intervals in the northern parts of the larger islands. Light and occasional drizzles are not ruled out in the northeastern mid-altitudes during the early morning.
During the central hours of the day, clearings will open up, while the southern slopes and high areas will remain mostly clear or sunny. In the summit of Tenerife, the wind will blow lightly to moderately from the southwest at high altitudes of Teide, with the breeze regime maintained on the southwestern coasts of the island.
The General Directorate of Emergencies reminds the public of the importance of staying informed through official sources and taking extra precautions, especially in areas where warnings are active. It is recommended to avoid outdoor activities in wind-exposed areas and not to swim at beaches with red flags or adverse conditions.
