The Government of the Canary Islands has taken a firm step towards the regulation of outdoor tourism this Monday. The Government Council has agreed to submit to the Consultative Council the draft decree that will regulate for the first time in the archipelago campsites, camping areas for motorhomes, caravans, and similar vehicles, as well as camping linked to isolated rural buildings and unique tourist accommodations.
The initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Tourism and Employment led by Jéssica de León, comes in response to a long-standing demand from the sector. Until now, the Canary Islands lacked specific regional regulations for this type of tourism, which has experienced significant growth over the last decade. The opinion of the Consultative Council is the final step before the definitive approval of the decree.
A Long-Awaited Regulation
The project establishes for the first time the conditions for the establishment and operation of these accommodations throughout the Canary territory. Minister De León has highlighted that “this regulation represents a decisive step towards ordering this type of tourism, diversifying the islands' offerings, and responding to a growing demand with regulations that ensure sustainability, quality of services, and legal security.”
During the drafting of the text, a broad dialogue process has been developed with public administrations, sector representatives, and entities linked to outdoor tourism. The aim has been to have a consensual regulation, adapted to the reality of the Canary Islands, that offers legal security to both entrepreneurs and users.
Impact on Canary Tourism
The future regulation aims to improve the quality of outdoor tourism offerings, promote new business initiatives, and reconcile the development of this activity with the conservation of the natural environment of the islands. This is a booming sector: more and more tourists and residents are opting for this type of accommodation, which until now operated in a legal vacuum.
With this regulation, the Canary Islands will be up to date compared to other autonomous communities that already have similar regulations. Once the Consultative Council issues its opinion, the project will return to the Government Council for final approval. The regulation is expected to come into force throughout 2026, thus providing a clear framework for a sector that has been demanding it for years.
