The PP candidate for the Mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Poli Suárez, does not close the door to agreements with Vox if he needs support to govern, although his priority is an absolute majority.
The Education Councillor of the Canary Islands Government and PP candidate for the Mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Poli Suárez, has made it clear that he does not rule out a pact with any political party, including Vox, if necessary to form a government in the Gran Canaria capital. In an interview on Cadena Ser, Suárez stated that he will talk to any party that has "a city project" and does not cut rights, although his goal is to achieve an absolute majority and not depend on anyone.
"There you will find me. On the opposite side, you will not find me. Whoever it may be," emphasised the popular candidate, who nevertheless hinted that Vox is not his preferred partner, but rather an option in a fragmented scenario. Suárez insisted that his priority is to obtain enough votes to govern alone, but if that is not possible, "we will reach agreements with those who have a city project, a capital project."
Pacts with PSOE and other forces
The popular candidate also confirmed that he would indeed pact with PSOE if it prevents the far-right from entering the municipal government. As an example, he cited the agreements reached in municipalities like Teror or Arucas, where PP and PSOE have governed together. He also mentioned Primero Canarias, Nueva Canarias and Coalición Canaria as possible partners to promote a common project for the city.
"I do not rule out understanding with parties like PSOE, Nueva Canarias, Coalición Canaria or Primero Canarias if the goal is to promote a common project for the city," Suárez stated, who expressed his openness to negotiate with all forces, but always under clear political conditions. The PP candidate assures that he is not arriving "at the last minute" to the candidacy because he knows the capital well and has worked in it for years.
Cleaning, waste tax and IBI, priorities
Poli Suárez also focused on the municipal problems he will address if he reaches the Mayor's office. Among them, he highlighted street cleaning, the waste tax, IBI, budget execution and the lack of response to residents in neighbourhoods like San Francisco or Las Torres. The popular candidate assured that he is preparing an electoral programme with collectives, social agents and third sector entities.
"I balance my work in the Education Department with preparing a programme that responds to the real needs of citizens," explained Suárez, who is confident in being able to achieve an absolute majority and not have to depend on pacts. However, his willingness to negotiate with Vox has generated reactions from other political forces, who see this stance as a strategy to expand his support base.
The PP candidate for the Mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria thus leaves the door open to all kinds of agreements, although with conditions: that the partner has a city project and does not cut rights. The question now is whether Vox will accept that framework or, on the contrary, demand tougher concessions. What is clear is that, if he does not achieve an absolute majority, Poli Suárez will have to negotiate with whoever it takes to govern the Gran Canaria capital.
