Lucía Rodríguez and Adriana Calvo win their matches and remain in contention in the qualifying rounds of the ITF W15 taking place at the Gran Canaria Tennis & Pádel Center. Six Canarian players were eliminated in the second round.
Lucía Rodríguez and Adriana Calvo are currently the only representatives from Gran Canaria still with a chance to enter the main draw of the ITF W15 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Both overcame their respective matches in the second round of the qualifying phase held at the Gran Canaria Tennis & Pádel Center on Monday.
The tournament, which offers $15,000 in prizes and ITF ranking points, brings together young talents from around the world. The day resulted in a bittersweet balance for the local contingent: alongside the victories of Rodríguez and Calvo, there were eliminations of Marta García, Sophie Méndez, Noah Rojas, and Marta Gayoso, who lost their respective matches but competed at a good level.
Doubles with a Canarian touch
In the doubles category, up to ten Gran Canarian players will make their debut in the tournament. The pairs formed by Gabriela Paun and Lucía Rodríguez; Adriana Calvo and Sofía Monzó; Sophie Méndez and Keyla De Campora; Irene Vigara and Carlota Vila; as well as Silvia Bosch – who will partner with Yaiza Bordería – and Marta Gayoso – alongside Andrea Palazón – will seek to advance in the doubles draw.
The tournament's sports director, Susan Sananes, positively assessed the level displayed: "We are very satisfied with the development of these first days. The level of the players is very high, and we are also seeing how the Canarian tennis players have the opportunity to compete at home against international rivals, a very valuable experience for their sporting growth."
"Our goal is to continue consolidating this tournament as a reference for women's tennis and to offer a competition that promotes values such as effort, respect, equality, and overcoming challenges," added Sananes.
Decisive Tuesday for the qualifiers
Activity will continue this Tuesday with the third and final round of the qualifying phase, which will award the last spots for the main draw. Additionally, the final draw will kick off with the celebration of four matches. The highly anticipated individual debuts of Gran Canarians Gabriela Paun and Silvia Bosch will take place on Wednesday, as they aim to start their participation with a victory in front of the local crowd.
The ITF W15 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, organized by CD Costa Arenas and sponsored by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria through the Insular Sports Institute, has the collaboration of the Canarian Tennis Federation and private brands Hidramar Group and Incapol.
