The Candelaria Town Hall hosted the presentation of the III Tamaimos Awards, which recognise experimentation with local clay. Seven pieces were awarded in the professional and amateur categories.

The Candelaria Town Hall was the venue last Friday, July 17, for the gala presentation of the III Tamaimos Awards for Experimental Proposals using Local Clay. The event, which combined the opening of an exhibition with the award ceremony, brought together creators, authorities, and ceramics enthusiasts in the council hall.

The winners in the professional category

In the professional category, the first prize went to David Marrero Fuentes for his piece Luz, which scored 423 out of a possible 500 points. The jury highlighted its texture, design, contrast, and balance. The award comes with 1,000 euros.

The Professional Design Award was given to Begonia Matamoros Durán for Tare, with 421 points, praised for its central piece and reinterpretation of tradition. The artist received 500 euros. Meanwhile, Verónica Hernández Trujillo won the Professional Experimentation Award for Luminaria, with 414 points, due to the work on the plates and its final texture, also awarded 500 euros.

The winners in the amateur category

In the student/amateur category, the first prize was awarded to Francisco Miguel González Rivero for Farola de Jardín, with 398 points, for the interplay of pieces and the balance of the composition. He took home 400 euros.

The Student/Amateur Design Award went to Jisemel Páez for Candelita, with 379 points, recognised for the dual use of the piece and its design (200 euros). The same author also won the Experimentation Award for Wi-Fire, with 377 points, for its design and waterproofing with beeswax (200 euros).

Additionally, the jury awarded a Special Mention to Ángel Andrés Matamoros Ramos for his pieces INU I and II, with 339 points, for their special beauty, symmetry, and finish play.

A distinguished jury and exhibition open to the public

The jury was composed of ceramist Ernesto Rodríguez, potter Isabel Miranda Galindo, designer and sculptor Mauricio Jiménez, Culture Councillor Manuel González, and the representative of the Fundación Canaria Tamaimos and jury secretary, Raúl Guanche. All of them highlighted the quality and originality of the works presented.

The Culture Councillor, Manuel González, positively evaluated the initiative: “I want to congratulate all the award winners and those who participated in this third edition of the Tamaimos Awards for their talent and commitment to ceramics and local clay. The Town Hall will continue to support these awards, which highlight both the pottery tradition of Candelaria and the creativity of new generations of artists, consolidating our municipality as a reference in this field.”

The exhibition featuring the presented works will be open for visits in the hall of the Candelaria Town Hall from July 20 to 24, from 8:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 20:00, and from July 28 to August 7, from 8:00 to 13:00, except on August 1 and 2, when it will be closed. On Tuesday, August 4, at 19:00, there will be a guided tour and a round table with the participants, after which the exhibition will close its doors.
