The Dutch Maaike Huvermann narrowly defeated Sarah-Quita Offringa by just half a point in the women's single elimination final of the windsurfing event held in Fuerteventura. The competition will continue with the double elimination.
The Dutch windsurfer Maaike Huvermann achieved a close victory over the Aruban Sarah-Quita Offringa on Saturday in the women's single elimination final of the windsurfing event taking place in Fuerteventura. The final score was just half a point apart, with 29.1 points for Huvermann against Offringa's 32.5 in a heat filled with high-level maneuvers.
The final, which started at 14:39, pitted two of the best specialists on the circuit against each other. Huvermann opened her performance with a regular kono and continued with a shaka and a culo, while Offringa did not complete her first attempt at a skopu but responded with a spock into culo and a forward loop. The tension remained until the last seconds, when Offringa managed a culo, a shaka, and a regular kono, but it was not enough to surpass the Dutch competitor.
Women's Semifinals
Before the final, Huvermann had qualified by defeating Lisa Kloster (Germany) in the first semifinal by 29.1 to 20.7 points. Kloster had been ahead during the first half with maneuvers such as a gozzada, a regular kono, and a culo, but Huvermann came back in the last minutes with several shaka, a culo, and a spock kono.
In the other semifinal, Sarah-Quita Offringa showcased her class by beating the German Sandra Schill by 32.5 to 2.2 points. The Aruban opened with a regular kono and added a forward loop, a pasko, an air funnel, and a burner, once again surpassing the 30-point barrier.
Final B and Women's Podium
The women's Final B, which decided the third and fourth places, featured the Germans Lisa Kloster and Sandra Schill. Kloster started with a flaka and increased her score with a regular kono and a culo, while Schill attempted a funnel and a skopu without completing them. Kloster maintained control and secured third place in the single elimination.
This result corresponds to the single elimination, and it can still change with the double elimination that will take place in the coming days. Windsurfing fans in the Canary Islands are closely following the event in Fuerteventura, where the wind and waves have allowed for a high-level spectacle.
Men's Competition
In the men's category, the Greek Lennart Neubauer triumphed over the Belgian Yentel Caers in the final by 0.11 points, with a score of 41.2 to 37.3. Neubauer took the initiative with a double culo, a shifty, a spock culo, a pasko, a bongka, and an air skopu. Caers responded with an air funnel into one-handed burner and a double culo, but was unable to catch up.
The Swiss Balz Müller completed the men's podium by defeating the Japanese Takumi Moriya in Final B, after the first start was cancelled due to a flag issue. Müller set the highest score of the quarter-finals with 45.42 points.
The competition will continue in the coming days with the double elimination, where the windsurfers will seek to improve their positions. Organisers hope that the weather conditions remain favourable for the development of the heats.
