The Cádiz native Nía Suardíaz, recently crowned world champion of Wingfoil Surf-Freestyle, begins her participation this Monday in the third week of the Fuerteventura Windsurfing & Wingfoil World Cup.
The world champion of Wingfoil Surf-Freestyle, Nía Suardíaz, returns to competition this Monday in the 38th edition of the Fuerteventura Windsurfing & Wingfoil World Cup, which is entering its third week of events in the islands. The Cádiz native, who has just secured her third world title in Gran Canaria, arrives at the Majorcan event as the leading figure in the ranking, with 2,740 points.
Suardíaz tops the standings ahead of fellow Spaniard Sofía Ginzinger (2,240 points) and Austrian Viola Lippitsch (1,700), the winner of the last event. The Spanish athlete expressed her satisfaction with the title achieved and her motivation to face the new challenge in Fuerteventura: “I have already become the world champion of freestyle and I am super happy to be here once again. I believe that for the races the wind will be much lighter than in Gran Canaria. I want to give my best and I think the best rider is seen in different conditions,” she stated.
The competition programme includes the two official disciplines of the GWA: Surf-Freestyle and FreeFly-Slalom, in both men's and women's categories. Suardíaz is also among the Spanish representatives expected for the FreeFly-Slalom, and she will begin her participation in the women's Surf-Freestyle bracket facing French competitor Helene Simonnet in the eighth heat of the initial round.
Meanwhile, Sofía Ginzinger, who is looking to maintain her second place in the overall ranking, will face French competitor Enoha Laurent in her first match. The women's competition promises intense excitement, with the presence of other Spaniards such as Olivia Sánchez Moral, who will compete in Surf-Freestyle, and Mar de Arce, who returns to Fuerteventura after a year affected by a shoulder injury and will focus her participation on FreeFly-Slalom.
In the men's category, the world title is at stake. Austrian Tomas Acherer leads the standings with 2,470 points, just 20 ahead of American Christopher Macdonald, the winner in Gran Canaria. Danish current champion Benjamin Castenskiold occupies third place with 2,290 points. The highest-ranked Spaniard in the men's Surf-Freestyle is Nathan Berger, who is in thirteenth place with 980 points.
The Spanish participation in men's Surf-Freestyle includes Nathan Berger, Nöe Mercier, Benjamín Berger, and Alberto Citzia. In the women's category, besides Suardíaz, Ginzinger, and Sánchez Moral, Olivia Sánchez Moral will also compete. For the speed trials, the expected Spanish representation consists of Alberto Citzia and Jeremy Rodríguez in the men's category, and Nía Suardíaz, Mar de Arce, Sofía Ginzinger, and Olivia Sánchez Moral in the women's category.
Among the Canary participants, Nöe Mercier stands out, ranked twenty-fourth in the men's Surf-Freestyle, and Jeremy Rodríguez, who will take part in the men's FreeFly-Slalom. Both local athletes will seek to take advantage of the winds of Fuerteventura to improve their positions in the world ranking.
The Fuerteventura Windsurfing & Wingfoil World Cup is one of the most important events on the international wingfoil calendar, and this year it brings together the best specialists in the world on the Majorcan beaches. The competition will take place throughout the week, with weather conditions being a key factor, especially the wind, which according to Suardíaz could be lighter than in Gran Canaria.
Canary wingfoil fans have a unique opportunity to see the world champion and the rest of the best riders on the planet in action. The events are held at Sotavento beach, in the municipality of Pájara, a location known for its excellent conditions for wind sports.
