The square of the hermitage of San Miguel hosted the presentation of Honours and Distinctions by the Pájara Town Hall to individuals and groups who have contributed to the development of the municipality.
The Pájara Town Hall recognised this weekend the work of six individuals and three groups at an event held in the square of the hermitage of San Miguel. The Fuerteventura Motorcyclists Association, the Fortuite Pigeon Racing Club, artist Juan Miguel Cubas, teacher Ezequiel de Saá Díaz, poet Andrés González Francés (posthumously), Ramón Domínguez Valerón, the Casa de Canarias in Madrid, and Germán Belmonte Grass received distinctions for their contributions to the municipality.
The evening was attended by island and municipal authorities, who presented the distinctions in an atmosphere of recognition and emotion. The Fuerteventura Motorcyclists Association will be honoured with a sculpture in the municipality, while the Fortuite Club will have a commemorative plaque installed in a public space. Local artist Juan Miguel Cubas will have a street or public space named after him, and teacher Ezequiel de Saá Díaz will have a plaque at CEIP Morro Jable, where he taught since 1991. Poet Andrés González Francés received a posthumous tribute.
One of the most emotional moments came with the speech by Ramón Domínguez Valerón, who received the Gold Medal of the municipality for his work in promoting athletics. Visibly moved, he shared the medal with Pepe Espino, who passed away in May 2024, a legendary figure in Majorero sports, teacher, and founder of the Morro Jable Athletics School alongside Domínguez. The gesture touched the attendees, who remembered Espino's legacy.
Germán Belmonte Grass, another recipient of the Gold Medal, also moved the audience. He arrived in Fuerteventura in 1993 and has since promoted important tourism projects that have generated employment and development in Pájara. "Thanks to Pájara and the Majorero island for the generosity with which they have welcomed those of us who came from outside. This municipality has been our roof, a refuge in the storm, our family, opportunities, and great support. A school of life," Belmonte stated during his speech.
The Casa de Canarias in Madrid also received the Gold Medal for its cultural and social contribution, highlighting the bond between the Canary community in the capital and the islands. The event concluded with a call to continue working for the municipality, which is experiencing a period of tourist and demographic growth.
For the residents of Pájara, these recognitions represent a boost to local identity and a thank you to those who have contributed their bit. The planned plaques and sculptures will be located in public spaces, allowing the legacy of the honourees to endure in the daily life of the municipality. The Town Hall has not specified dates for the installation, but it is expected that the works will take place in the coming months.
