The fourth hotel of the ZEL brand, driven by Meliá Hotels International and Rafa Nadal, opened its doors on June 25 in Playa Barca, in the municipality of Pájara. Its main novelty compared to other establishments in the chain is the wind as a tourist resource and a structural part of the guest experience.
The wind, that natural resource which has defined the character of Fuerteventura for decades, has now become the guiding thread of an unprecedented hotel proposal on the island. On June 25, ZEL Fuerteventura opened its doors, the fourth establishment of the brand created by Meliá Hotels International and Rafa Nadal, and it did so with a philosophy that goes beyond simple accommodation: integrating the wind as part of the guest experience.
Located in Playa Barca, within the Sotavento beach and next to the Jandía Natural Park, in the municipality of Pájara, the four-star adults-only hotel features 142 rooms and 81 suites. All of them are designed to maintain a connection with the outside through terraces, balconies, gardens, or views of the ocean and the natural surroundings.
The architecture of the complex moves away from the closed resort model and opts for open spaces. A central courtyard acts as a meeting point and articulates a proposal inspired by Mediterranean houses, reinterpreted in Fuerteventura with materials such as wood, esparto, ceramics, and tones that evoke volcanic rock.
The 'outdoor living' philosophy of the ZEL brand finds here a particularly direct application. The landscape is not merely a visual backdrop; it intervenes in the movements around the hotel, in the sports programming, in the gastronomy, and in the relationship between the indoor and outdoor areas.
Among the categories of rooms, there are stays with private gardens, suites with glassed balconies facing the ocean, and two Casa ZEL, which incorporate a bedroom, dressing room, living area, and spacious terraces.
The gastronomic offer includes Parda Beach, the main restaurant that merges the culinary tradition of the Mediterranean with local products from the island; Voltaje, featuring a selection of cocktails and signature drinks; and Café de Finca, the specialty coffee area.
But the great differentiator of ZEL Fuerteventura compared to other hotels in the brand is its commitment to physical activity and movement. Well-being is not limited to treatments or moments of disconnection: it incorporates movement, social interaction, and contact with the destination.
The weekly programming includes disciplines such as running clubs, barre, HIIT, gravity fitness, and POUND, in addition to group classes and activities related to the sea. Guests can combine these sessions with the gym, the infinity pool, or practicing windsurfing, kitesurfing, and wingfoiling.
The René Egli school, located next to the hotel and the Sotavento lagoon, facilitates access to training, equipment rental, and specialized services without the need to travel outside the complex.
The hotel's relationship with the wind becomes especially visible during the celebration of the 38th Fuerteventura World Cup, which takes place from July 17 to 26 on the same Sotavento beach. The Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam is one of the main events on the professional windsurfing calendar, and international wingfoiling competitions extend until August 1.
The sports facility, the René Egli school, and the ZEL Fuerteventura and Paradisus by Meliá Fuerteventura hotels share the same location, making the area a hub for sports tourism and wellness.
The company highlights that the opening of ZEL Fuerteventura is part of the development of the first wellness hub in the Atlantic, alongside Paradisus Fuerteventura, Meliá Hotels International's most ambitious wellness initiative.
The proposal is aimed at a traveller who does not necessarily seek intensive sports holidays but wishes to stay active. They can book classes, start a water discipline, alternate a morning at sea with relaxation by the pool, or take an excursion through the natural enclave where the hotel is located.
Fuerteventura boasts a valuable natural heritage recognized by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve. ZEL Fuerteventura adds to the island's tourist offer with a proposal that turns the wind into an ally, not an inconvenience, and invites guests to experience the destination from within.
