The Plenary of the City Council of Puerto del Rosario unanimously approved an 18.5% reduction in the waste tax, upon confirming that the projected income exceeds the cost of the service. This measure adds to the existing discounts in the tax ordinance.
Residents of Puerto del Rosario will see their waste bill reduced starting in the coming months. The municipal plenary unanimously approved an 18.5% reduction in the waste and street cleaning tax this Monday, after the City Council verified that the projected revenue exceeds the actual cost of the service.
The modification was added to the agenda on an urgent basis, once the tax roll was closed and the final forecast of income and expenses was analysed. As explained by the mayor, David de Vera, in a radio interview, the adjustment responds to the economic balance required by the regulations governing municipal taxes.
"Seeing that the income is above the committed expenses, by 18.5%, today we bring the proposal for a discount or reduction of 18.5% of that waste tax linked to urban waste and street cleaning," the mayor stated.
The reduction affects the portion corresponding to waste collection and street cleaning, and will be applied once the administrative processing of the modification approved by the Plenary is completed. In this way, the City Council adjusts the tax amount to the actual cost of the service, one of the main criticisms that arose after the implementation of the new tax resulting from state legislation on waste.
This reduction adds to the discounts already included in the tax ordinance approved to adapt the municipal tax to state regulations, which require that the service be financed with its own income. With this decision, the City Council responds to residents' demands and ensures that the amount of the bill corresponds to the effective cost of the service.
Mayor David de Vera highlighted that the City Council has worked to ensure that citizens do not pay more than necessary. "We have done our homework and, upon confirming that the income exceeds the expenses, it was logical to return that surplus to the residents," he stated. The measure was supported by all political groups present at the Plenary, reflecting a consensus on the need to adjust taxes to economic reality.
For the residents of Puerto del Rosario, this reduction represents relief in a context of widespread tax and fee increases. The City Council expects the new rate to be reflected in the upcoming bills, once the administrative procedures are completed.
