The Ingenio Town Hall has put out to tender the works for the Route of the Mills, a new pedestrian walkway that will connect La Rueda street with Néstor Álamo Park. The project, valued at €1.54 million, includes a metal bridge and accessibility improvements.
The historic centre of Ingenio will feature a new pedestrian axis that will resolve one of its main urban barriers. The Town Hall has initiated the tendering process for the so-called Route of the Mills, an intervention valued at €1.54 million that will connect La Rueda street with Néstor Álamo Park through an accessible route and a unique metal bridge over the Ingenio ravine.
The project, drafted by the municipal technical team led by architect Manuel Méndez Bordón and technical architect Eduardo Rodríguez González, aims to overcome the steep gradient existing between the upper part of the historic centre and the park. This space, despite its environmental and heritage value, has maintained limited use precisely due to the difficulty of access, a shortcoming that the new infrastructure aims to correct.
The intervention is structured around two major actions. On one hand, a section of about 75 meters of La Rueda street will be remodelled, featuring new basalt stone pavements, resting areas, and small viewpoints. On the other hand, a metal bridge will be constructed to overcome a gradient of over nine meters, designed to integrate with the vegetation and rocky walls of the park.
The new infrastructure will meet universal accessibility criteria, with slopes of less than 8%, allowing anyone to traverse the route independently. In addition to the bridge, the works will include the undergrounding of electrical lines, improvements to the sewage network, and modernisation of public lighting, thereby renewing urban services in the area.
The intervention will take place over an approximate area of 660 square meters within the surroundings of Néstor Álamo Park. Since it affects the Ingenio ravine, it will require specific authorisations from the Insular Water Council, a procedure that the Town Hall has already accounted for in the project planning.
The execution period for the works will be 12 months from the start of the work, once the contract is awarded through a simplified open procedure. In the awarding process, not only the economic offer will be evaluated, but also technical aspects related to the planning of the works and improvements proposed by the bidding companies.
With this action, Ingenio seeks to consolidate a route that highlights its hydraulic heritage, featuring elements such as the Antoñico Bordón Mill, as part of the municipal strategy to revitalise the urban centre. The Route of the Mills will combine accessibility, heritage conservation, and economic development, aiming to make the park a space more integrated into the daily life of the municipality.
For the residents of Ingenio, this new connection will represent a significant change in pedestrian mobility, facilitating access to a green area that until now had been relegated due to its difficult access. The metal bridge, in addition to its practical function, will become a unique element of the urban landscape, offering viewpoints and resting areas along the route.
The Town Hall expects the works to begin in the coming months, once the tendering process is completed. The Route of the Mills adds to other revitalisation efforts in the historic centre, such as the pedestrianisation of streets and the recovery of public spaces, aiming to make Ingenio a more accessible and attractive municipality for both residents and visitors.
