A man and a woman were attacked by a group of youths in Plaza de España, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The man suffered a bone fracture and stitches on his lip.
Sunday night turned into a nightmare for two siblings who were passing through the Plaza de España area in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. A large group of youths shouted at them and verbally assaulted the woman. When her brother stepped in to defend her, at least five of the attackers began to hit him with belts and other objects, causing a bone fracture in his nose and a wound on his lip that required stitches.
After the assault, the group fled the scene before National Police officers arrived, who were alerted by witnesses. Police sources confirmed that, so far, none of the attackers have been identified, although the investigation remains open. The report has already been forwarded to the judicial authorities.
The victim's sister has made an appeal on her social media to gather information or graphic evidence that could help locate those responsible. In her message, she described the attackers as a large group of youths of Maghreb appearance. The National Police have not confirmed this description but do not rule out any line of investigation.
The assaulted man was taken to Doctor Negrín University Hospital, where he received medical attention for his nasal fracture and stitches on his lip. His condition is not serious, but he will require medical follow-up. The woman was physically unharmed, although she is affected by the incident.
This incident adds to other episodes of violence recorded in the Gran Canaria capital in recent weeks. Neighbours in the area have expressed their concern for safety around Plaza de España, a busy area especially on weekends. Some shopkeepers have requested increased police surveillance to prevent similar situations from recurring.
The National Police have urged anyone who witnessed the events or has images to contact the authorities. Citizens are also advised to exercise caution in the area and report any suspicious activity.
The investigation remains open, and it is expected that security cameras in the area may provide clues about the identity of the attackers. So far, no arrests have been made.
