The National Police have arrested a man and a woman, both with records, for stealing belongings from a room in a tourist establishment in the capital of Gran Canaria.

The events occurred on the night of July 22, when several officers were dispatched to the accommodation after receiving a call from a guest who had suffered the theft of her belongings.
The victim explained to the officers that after checking in and leaving her belongings in the properly locked room, upon returning she found that one of her bags had disappeared. When alerting the other guests, several of them indicated that they had seen a bag with the same characteristics in one of the rooms occupied by the alleged perpetrators.
The woman was later able to recover her bag, although she noted that items were missing from inside it. Meanwhile, the suspects quickly left the establishment upon learning that police assistance had been requested. The swift action of the officers allowed them to locate and arrest one of the suspects, while the second implicated was arrested later during the investigation.
According to a statement from the National Police, the investigation revealed that the couple had occupied several of the rooms in the establishment, which is why they knew the access codes, which were not changed after guests checked out. This modus operandi facilitated their access to the rooms of other tourists.
The officers are now investigating the possible connection of the detainees with other reports registered in the same accommodation that present a similar procedure. The couple, of whom no further details have been disclosed, has been placed at the disposal of the judiciary.
This incident highlights the importance of tourist establishments enhancing security measures, especially regarding the renewal of access codes after each guest change. The National Police recommends that tourists do not leave valuables in plain sight and use the room safes.
