The capital of Gran Canaria will host the first Olympic Week, an event that will combine sport, education, and culture with the support of the Spanish Olympic Committee.
The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) have sealed an agreement to organise the first Olympic Week, an event aimed at bringing the values of Olympism closer to the public. The mayor, Carolina Darias, and the president of the COE, Alejandro Blanco, formalised the commitment this Monday at the organisation's headquarters in Madrid, although the date of the event has yet to be set.
The initiative, which aims for continuity, intends to become a national reference. According to municipal sources, the programme will include sports activities, meetings with Olympic athletes, and educational proposals aimed at schoolchildren, clubs, and families. The goal is to convey values such as effort, respect, and overcoming challenges through participatory experiences.
One of the central themes will be the promotion of Canarian sports talent. The Olympic Week will highlight the Olympic athletes from the archipelago, who will act as ambassadors for the project. Additionally, traditional disciplines such as Canarian sailing, Canarian wrestling, and Canarian bowling will be integrated, combining tradition with high-level sport.
The City Council emphasises that this event will turn the city into a meeting point for sport, education, and coexistence. “Olympism is a tool for social cohesion,” municipal sources stated. The COE, for its part, highlighted the importance of bringing the Olympic legacy to all audiences, especially the younger ones.
The Olympic Week aims to grow in future editions and become an exportable model to other Spanish cities. For now, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is preparing to host an event that promises to energise the sporting and cultural life of the capital.
