The Cabildo of La Gomera, in collaboration with APEDECA, has launched a mobile service to inform about the 'La Gomera Acompaña' project, which offers comprehensive care to elderly people at risk of loneliness. The sessions begin on July 30 in Agulo and will travel to various municipalities.
The Cabildo of La Gomera has initiated a mobile information service to bring the 'La Gomera Acompaña' project closer to the island's municipalities, an initiative aimed at preventing unwanted loneliness and social isolation among the elderly. The action, developed in cooperation with the Association for the Assistance of Dependent Persons in the Canary Islands (APEDECA), includes informative sessions, cognitive stimulation workshops, and mobility activities such as yoga, gymnastics, and Zumba.
The president of the Cabildo, Casimiro Curbelo, explained that this mobile service "allows the project to reach the towns and facilitates that elderly people, their families, and the community know about the available support, regardless of the municipality or area in which they reside." Curbelo emphasized that, in a territory marked by an aging population and geographical dispersion, "it is essential that social policies be close, accessible, and capable of reaching homes."
The president stressed that the goal is to move towards a care model that places people at the centre and allows for anticipating possible situations of isolation. "It is not just about providing help in response to a specific need, but about creating bonds, promoting autonomy, and ensuring that elderly people can continue to develop their lives in their usual environment with well-being, safety, and companionship," he stated.
For her part, the island councillor for Social Policy, Rosa Elena García, pointed out that the informative sessions will have a practical, participatory character and will be open to the public. "We want to clearly and closely explain how the project works, resolve doubts, and facilitate access to its services, but also generate meeting spaces that promote social relationships, participation, and active aging," she specified.
García highlighted that "preventing unwanted loneliness requires coordinated action among administrations, social entities, families, and the entire community." She encouraged elderly people, family members, neighbours, and social agents from each municipality to participate in the sessions and learn about the resources offered by the programme.
The schedule of sessions begins on Thursday, July 30, from 17:00 to 20:00, at the Teleclub of Las Rosas, in the municipality of Agulo. It will continue on Friday, August 7, at the Plaza de El Salvador, in Alajeró, from 10:00 to 13:00. On Monday, August 10, the Cultural House of the Convent in Hermigua will host the session in the morning from 10:00 to 13:00, and at the same time, on Monday, August 17, the Cultural Centre of Arure in Valle Gran Rey will do so.
The itinerary will conclude in Vallehermoso on Friday, August 28, at the Plaza de Tamargada, from 10:00 to 13:00. In the case of San Sebastián de La Gomera, information can be requested in person at the public service office of APEDECA, located at Calle Real, nº 65. The dates for activities and workshops in the capital will be scheduled soon.
The 'La Gomera Acompaña' project is primarily aimed at people over 65 who may find themselves in situations of social vulnerability, relational fragility, lack of support networks, or difficulties accessing available resources. Its purpose is to prevent and reduce unwanted loneliness and social isolation through comprehensive, personalized care focused on the personal, emotional, social, and material needs of each participant.
The project includes support at home, individual and group accompaniment, attention to social and emotional needs, guidance on resources and benefits, promotion of personal autonomy, and coordination with social, health, and community services. It also incorporates activities tailored to the interests and abilities of the elderly to promote coexistence, mutual support, and active participation in their environment.
The initiative is developed through cooperation between the Cabildo of La Gomera and APEDECA, and has an investment of over €142,000.
