ASG demands the Canary Government a report on the Canary Agenda and protection for the church in La Gomera

ASG will ask the Canary Parliament about the status of the Canary Agenda and the preservation of La Gomera's Matriz Church, a 15th-century temple linked to Columbus.

The Parliamentary Group Agrupación Socialista Gomera (ASG) will bring two key initiatives to the next plenary session of the Canary Parliament: to learn about the status of the Canary Agenda and to ensure the preservation of the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in San Sebastián de La Gomera.

Casimiro Curbelo, spokesperson for ASG in the regional chamber, has submitted two questions for the upcoming session of government oversight presided over by Fernando Clavijo. The first is directed at the regional president and focuses on the degree of implementation of the Canary Agenda, the roadmap that outlines the main demands of the Archipelago before the State.

The Canary Agenda, a pending issue

Curbelo wants to know what concrete progress has been made since the Parliament overwhelmingly supported this negotiation strategy with the central government. Several months have passed, and the spokesperson considers it necessary to know which commitments have been fulfilled, which remain pending, and what timeline the Executive is working with to conclude a decisive negotiation for the islands.

The Gomera leader will emphasize the importance of the so-called Canary Decree translating into effective measures and that the future reform of the regional financing system reflects the particularities of the outermost region, insularity, and double insularity. "Agreements only reach their true value when they become concrete solutions for the citizens," Curbelo will argue.

For the Green Islands — La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro — the development of the Canary Agenda represents an opportunity to strengthen territorial cohesion, improve public services, and generate new economic and social opportunities, according to the ASG spokesperson.

The Matriz Church, a five-century legacy

ASG's second initiative focuses on the preservation of the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in San Sebastián de La Gomera. Curbelo will ask the Minister of Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture what actions are planned to be developed, in collaboration with the island Cabildo, to ensure the maintenance of this temple.

The building, whose origins date back to the late 15th century, is an essential piece of Canary heritage due to its architectural and artistic value and its connection to Christopher Columbus's stopover before departing for America. With over five centuries of history, the property requires ongoing planning to act preventively on sensitive elements such as the roofs.

Curbelo will advocate for the need to strengthen collaboration between the Canary Government, the Cabildo of La Gomera, the Bishopric, and the San Sebastián de La Gomera City Council to plan priority actions, define financing mechanisms, and establish a conservation timeline.

"Protecting our historical heritage means preserving collective memory, strengthening our identity, and passing on to future generations a legacy that also constitutes an important cultural and tourist asset for the Canaries," the ASG spokesperson will assert.

For Curbelo, both the effective implementation of the Canary Agenda and the preservation of heritage respond to the same institutional responsibility: to build an Archipelago with greater capacity to face its challenges, strengthen its identity, and ensure balanced development that reaches all the islands.

The oversight session will be held next week in the Canary Parliament, where President Clavijo is expected to respond to ASG's questions about the status of negotiations with the State and the timelines envisaged to materialize the agreements of the Canary Agenda.
