Councillor Pablo Rodríguez and Mayor Onalia Bueno have laid the first stone of the new roundabout on the GC-200, with an investment of €817,416.81. The long-awaited project aims to organise traffic and improve safety at the access to Mogán.

Work on the new roundabout on the GC-200, at the intersection with Avenida de la Constitución in Mogán, has already begun. The Councillor for Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Canary Islands Government, Pablo Rodríguez, and the Mayor of Mogán, Onalia Bueno, presided over the stone-laying ceremony this Wednesday. The project, with a budget of €817,416.81, has been awarded to Lopesan Asfaltos y Construcciones.

A long-standing demand finally comes true

The new infrastructure will replace the current intersection, which experiences a high volume of traffic and generates conflicting movements. As Rodríguez explained, this is a “long-demanded” project that has been waiting for two legislative terms. “Today is an important day for Mogán and for Gran Canaria,” said the councillor, who noted that this is just the first phase of a comprehensive plan to transform mobility in the municipality.

Mayor Bueno highlighted that the roundabout was a historical demand between 2015 and 2019, when Ángel Víctor Torres was the Councillor for Public Works of the Gran Canaria Cabildo. “It has had to be the Canary Islands Government again that fulfills that commitment to the residents,” she pointed out. The project will be complemented by the southern extension of Drago Street and the variant of the GC-200.

More safety and flow in access to the town of Mogán

The roundabout will organise the movements in and out from the GC-200 towards Avenida de la Constitución, improving visibility and eliminating the most problematic points. This will increase road safety and promote smoother traffic, benefiting the thousands of drivers who travel this route daily, especially during the tourist season.

For the residents of Mogán, this project represents relief from the usual traffic jams and greater safety at a point considered dangerous. The new roundabout will also facilitate access to services and shops in the town centre, improving the quality of life for residents.

The Taurito tunnel, the next major project

Rodríguez announced that later this year 2026, another highly anticipated project will go out to tender: the Taurito tunnel, with an investment exceeding €12 million. This infrastructure will provide a definitive solution to the road that has been closed since a landslide, improving connections in one of the main tourist municipalities in the Canary Islands.

The Public Works Department continues its plan to modernise the Canary road network, prioritising interventions that enhance safety and respond to citizens' demands. The Mogán roundabout is an example of how a moderate investment can have a significant impact on local mobility.

The roundabout works have an estimated execution period of several months, during which there will be traffic disruptions and detours. The Mogán City Council will inform residents promptly about the impact on traffic to minimise inconvenience to drivers.
