The national leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has backed the new popular candidate for the Mayor's Office of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Poli Suárez, at an event in the Gran Canaria capital on Thursday. The party aims to govern the city for the first time since 2015.
The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, arrived in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on Thursday to personally support Poli Suárez, the chosen one to lead the popular candidacy in the upcoming municipal elections. The event, held in a hotel in the capital, marks the beginning of the party's electoral campaign in the most populated city of the Canary Islands.
Suárez, the current Minister of Education of the Canary Government (CC-PP), takes on the challenge of returning the PP to the helm of the Gran Canaria capital, which has not been governed since 2015, when the socialist Augusto Hidalgo took the Mayor's Office from Juan José Cardona. Since then, the municipal government has been in the hands of the socialist Carolina Darias, supported by NC and Podemos.
An experienced municipal candidate
Poli Suárez is not new to local management. He was mayor of his hometown, Moya, from 2011 to 2019, where he gained experience in public service administration. He now aspires to govern a city of 381,868 inhabitants, the ninth largest in Spain by population.
At the event, alongside Feijóo, was the president of the Canary PP and vice president of the regional government, Manuel Domínguez. The three leaders agreed that the capital needs a political change that improves the management of services such as cleanliness and security, with the aim of enhancing the quality of life for residents.
The PP bets on urban change
Poli Suárez's candidacy advocates for a "better city". In his speech, the candidate emphasised that Las Palmas de Gran Canaria deserves a government that listens to citizens and resolves everyday problems, from waste collection to security in neighbourhoods.
Feijóo, for his part, highlighted Suárez's track record and his ability to lead a project that inspires the people of Gran Canaria. "Poli is the right person to bring life back to this city," said the national leader, who avoided specifying election dates but made it clear that the PP will work from now on to regain voters' trust.
For the residents of the capital, the announcement represents a new political landscape ahead of the upcoming municipal elections. Darias's management will be the main argument for the PP, which denounces a lack of investment in street cleaning and security issues in some districts. The popular candidate promises an emergency plan in the first hundred days if he comes to power.
Thursday's event is just the first step in what is expected to be an intense campaign. Poli Suárez has announced that he will tour all the city's neighbourhoods to listen to residents' demands and present his proposals. The electoral date, likely in May 2027, will decide whether the PP can take the Mayor's Office from the left.
