The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has awarded the works for the sixth phase of the renovation of Fernando Guanarteme street, between Viriato and Pizarro, for €1.17 million.
The Department of Planning, Urban Development and Housing has awarded the works of the sixth phase of the renovation of Fernando Guanarteme street to the company Urban2020 S.L. The affected section, located between Viriato and Pizarro streets, will undergo a comprehensive transformation aimed at prioritising pedestrians and calming traffic.
The budget amounts to €1,177,263.19, financed through the Cooperation Plan of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria. The councillor for the area, Mauricio Roque, has stated that this work “will complete the transformation of Fernando Guanarteme street, consolidating a more accessible, safe and balanced urban space for pedestrians, residents, businesses and vehicular traffic.”
More space for pedestrians and green areas
The intervention will cover an area of over 7,000 square metres. Of these, around 3,200 will be allocated to pedestrian spaces, about 3,400 to vehicular traffic, and approximately 460 to parking and loading/unloading. The aim is to create an urban platform with traffic calming criteria, reducing circulation speed and promoting coexistence between pedestrians, transport and commercial activity.
Additionally, new landscaped areas will be created with tree species adapted to the environment, such as 'Ficus Alii', 'Brachychiton acerifolius', 'Metrosideros excelsa' and 'Cercis siliquastrum', integrated into tree pits with an automated irrigation system. This will help improve climate comfort and environmental quality in an area that has so far had a predominantly asphalt profile.
Accessibility and technology for residents
The project reinforces universal accessibility with the installation of traffic lights with acoustic signals for visually impaired individuals. LED lights with a remote management system and a Passenger Information Panel (PIV) powered by solar energy, with autonomy of up to four days and a voice announcement system, will also be incorporated.
In terms of infrastructure, the household sanitation connections in poor condition will be renewed, and new networks for water supply, sanitation, irrigation, public lighting and conduits will be executed. All this aims to modernise a key road axis for mobility in the Isleta-Puerto-Guanarteme district.
For the residents and businesses in the area, the works will bring tangible improvements to their daily lives: wider sidewalks, less traffic noise, more shade and trees, and greater safety when crossing. The execution of the works is expected in the coming months, with a completion timeframe to be known after the re-planting act.
As is often the case with public works, patience will be required during the construction, but the result promises a more pleasant and modern space. Anyone who has walked along the already renovated section of Fernando Guanarteme street knows that the change is remarkable: fewer cars, more life on the sidewalk.
