The National Police have arrested a man in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for a public health offence after seizing 86 grams of hashish. The operation took place near the Santa Catalina interchange.

National Police officers conducting surveillance in the area of the Santa Catalina interchange were surprised on the afternoon of July 7. A group of people in a gardened area caught their attention and, upon identifying them, found a plastic bag containing a hashish block weighing 86 grams in one of their belongings.

The suspect, a man whose identity has not been disclosed, was arrested on the spot as the presumed author of a public health offence. The drug, according to official weighing, was around 86 grams, a quantity that exceeds the limit for personal use and clearly indicates drug trafficking.

Quick intervention in the heart of the capital

The events occurred in one of the busiest areas of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Santa Catalina interchange, a key transport hub and constant passage for locals and tourists. The National Police had established a preventive citizen security operation, and it was during this operation that the officers observed a group of people acting suspiciously in a gardened area.

According to police sources, the officers detected signs of possible drug use and proceeded to identify everyone present. During the search of their belongings, they located the bag with the hashish block. The detainee was taken to police facilities for the processing of proceedings.

Released with judicial appearances

After completing the procedures, the arrested individual was released, although he must appear before the judicial authority when required. The National Police have reminded that the investigation remains open and further actions related to this case are not ruled out.

For the residents of the capital of Gran Canaria, such interventions are common in a busy area like Santa Catalina. The police presence at the interchange and its surroundings remains as a deterrent measure, and the force encourages citizens to report any suspicious activity.

The seized drugs have been placed at the disposal of the judiciary, and the detainee is now awaiting a court summons. In the meantime, life at the interchange continues as usual, with the normality of any day in the heart of the city.
