The general secretary of CC in Gran Canaria claims that the party faces the upcoming electoral cycle with renewed leadership and new profiles, and rules out an agreement with Nueva Canarias.

The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Canary Islands Government and general secretary of Coalición Canaria in Gran Canaria, Pablo Rodríguez, has given an interview in which he assesses the state of the party ahead of the upcoming elections. Rodríguez asserts that the nationalist formation arrives "better prepared than ever" for the electoral cycle, thanks to the renewal of its leadership and the strengthening of local committees.

A balanced project among the islands

The politician from Telde defends that CC maintains its nationalist essence intact and summarises the party's identity with one phrase: "Coalición is Canarias". In his opinion, only a force with a Canary Islands focus can defend the interests of the Archipelago both in Madrid and in the regional institutions. Rodríguez argues that the old debate about the supposed predominance of Tenerife in the party belongs to the past and states that today there is a "balanced" project among all the islands.

Moreover, the minister insists on the need to promote a confluence of Canary Islands nationalism, which he considers a strategy to strengthen the defence of Canarias and not a matter of the survival of Coalición Canaria. He explains that discussions are progressing "from the bottom up", prioritising agreements in municipalities before addressing island-wide and regional pacts, although he admits that it will not be possible to reach them in all territories.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria needs "a shake-up"

Regarding the capital of Gran Canaria, Rodríguez maintains that Las Palmas de Gran Canaria needs "a shake-up" and "oxygen", as he believes it has lost dynamism in recent years in areas such as cleanliness, mobility, and cultural activity. Conversely, he practically rules out a confluence with Nueva Canarias, understanding that this formation has opted for alliances with left-wing parties instead of maintaining a joint nationalist project.

On a national level, Pablo Rodríguez believes it is up to the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to decide whether to submit his Executive to a vote of confidence or call elections if he fails to advance a new State Budget. In this context, he reiterates that Coalición Canaria is willing to negotiate those initiatives that benefit Canarias, but understands that the current political situation cannot be prolonged indefinitely.

No agreement with Vox and support for Clavijo

The nationalist leader also closes the door to any understanding with Vox, considering their proposals incompatible with the self-government model defended by Coalición Canaria. He also expresses his desire for Fernando Clavijo to be the party's candidate for the Presidency of the Government in the regional elections of 2027. Regarding his political future, he states that he will remain "at the disposal" of the organisation wherever he believes he can contribute the most.

For the Canary Islands reader, these statements serve as a barometer of the health of nationalism in the Islands, just as a new electoral cycle approaches that could define the regional political landscape. Rodríguez, a native of Telde and with responsibilities in the regional Government, is shaping up to be a key player in CC's strategy for the coming years.
