The Local Government Board of Telde has approved the awarding of liability insurance for all municipal staff, a pioneering measure that will cover employees against claims arising from their work.

The Telde City Council has taken a historic step in protecting its workers by hiring, for the first time, liability insurance for all municipal staff. The policy, awarded this Thursday, July 16, will cover public employees and municipal officials against claims arising from the exercise of their duties, provided they act without intent, fraud, or bad faith.

Award to Liberty Mutual for 17,347 euros annually

The contract has been awarded to Liberty Mutual Insurance Europe, Branch in Spain, for an annual amount of 17,347.26 euros. The insurer was the only bid submitted and met all the technical requirements of the procurement process, according to the City Council.

Until now, when a municipal worker faced legal proceedings due to their professional activity, the City Council had to directly assume the legal defense and costs charged to its budget, which generated an unpredictable financial exposure for municipal finances. With this policy, the financial risk is transferred to the insurer through the payment of a fixed annual premium.

Comprehensive coverage for the staff

The policy includes, among other coverages, legal defense, restoration of image, civil and criminal bonds, and liability towards third parties and the administration itself. The mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña, highlighted that

“this government continues to fulfill its commitment to dignify the working conditions of municipal workers. Today we take another step in protecting those who provide public service, offering coverage that provides security, peace of mind, and legal support in the exercise of their duties”.

From the Department of Human Resources and Internal Regime, they emphasized that this is a long-demanded measure that places the Telde City Council in line with other administrations that already have this type of coverage. The aim is to offer greater guarantees to both employees and the administration itself, reducing uncertainty in the face of potential claims.

Contracting through the FEMP framework agreement

The contract has been processed through the Framework Agreement of the Central Procurement of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), to which the Telde City Council is adhered. This formula allows for expedited contracting and better economic conditions thanks to centralized purchasing.

For the residents of Telde, this measure represents greater security in municipal management, as it prevents an unforeseen legal proceeding from compromising the economic stability of the City Council or causing paralysis in the administration. Additionally, public employees will have legal support that they previously did not have, improving their ability to perform their duties with peace of mind.
