The Teldense neighbourhood of Lomo Magullo begins its festivities in honour of the Virgin of Las Nieves this Friday, with a programme that includes the 56th Water Bringing and the opening speech by local resident Pepe López.
The Las Nieves festivities in Lomo Magullo, Telde, kick off this Friday, 24th July, with a Eucharist at 20:00, followed by the raising of the flag and the opening speech by local resident Pepe López, recognising his commitment to the neighbourhood. The organisation is managed by the El Naciente Festival Board, the Las Nieves Neighbourhood Association, and the parish of the same name.
On Saturday, 25th July, at 19:30, the image of the Virgin of Las Nieves, Mayor and Perpetual of Telde, will be lowered from her chamber to the throne. This year, the throne has been restored with the collaboration of the Telde City Council and the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, a new feature that enhances the procession on 5th August.
The 56th Water Bringing, an Unmissable Event
One of the most anticipated events is the Water Bringing, which celebrates its 56th edition this year on Sunday, 9th August. At 07:00, the floral wake-up call will begin, and at 12:00, the traditional water bringing will take place with the Agaete Band. This popular event, which recalls the importance of water in the history of the neighbourhood, gathers numerous locals and visitors.
The programme includes musical performances, street parties, and a night of traditions, aimed at keeping the neighbourhood's identity alive. The president of the Board, Juan Antonio Hernández, highlighted that the festivities "enjoy great health" thanks to community support.
Presentation with Institutional and Community Support
The presentation of the festivities took place in the Plaza de Las Nieves, attended by the mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña; the councillor for Culture, Juan Martel; councillor Adela Álvarez; the president of the Board; the opening speaker; and the author of the poster, Alejandro Jiménez. During the event, the new logo of the Board was presented, integrating the church tower, the Water Bringing, and the natural surroundings.
For the residents of Lomo Magullo, these festivities are "part of the history, identity, and collective memory of generations," according to the organisation. The offering to the Virgin will take place on 4th August, and the solemn procession on 5th August at 13:00, accompanied by the Telde Municipal Music Band.
The events provide an opportunity for residents of the Gran Canaria capital and tourists to learn about the neighbourhood's traditions. The restoration of the throne, funded by the City Council and the Cabildo, ensures that the image will process in optimal conditions. Pepe López's opening speech, scheduled for Friday, promises to be a tribute to the community that keeps these customs alive.
