The Cabildo of La Gomera has opened the registration period for the Elderly Island Meeting, which will take place on Sunday, July 19 in Hermigua, featuring performances by Los Sabandeños and a tribute to the women of Gomeran music.

The Cabildo of La Gomera has reminded that registrations for the new edition of the Elderly Island Meeting are still open. The event, scheduled for Sunday, July 19 in the municipality of Hermigua, promises a day of togetherness, leisure, and participation for the elderly of the island.

The island institution encourages seniors from all Gomeran municipalities to join this event, which has established itself as a space for intergenerational meeting and recognition of their life journey. Places are limited and can be formalised through senior associations or by calling 629 973 273.

Musical performances and tribute to Gomeran women

The programme includes a tribute show to Los Huaracheros, a performance by Los Sabandeños, and a tribute to Gomeran orchestras. This year, the recognition will focus on the role of women in La Gomera's music, featuring Doris Cabeza, Teresa Negrín, and Marinery Hernández.

“We want our elders to enjoy a special day, with music, humour, and activities designed for them,” said sources from the Cabildo.

The meeting is part of the Cabildo's initiatives to promote active ageing and strengthen the social participation of this group. For many attendees, it is a unique opportunity to reconnect with friends from other towns and share experiences.

How to register and deadlines

Interested individuals can register up to the day of the event, although it is recommended to do so in advance to facilitate organisation. Registration is free and includes access to all activities and performances. The phone 629 973 273 is available for inquiries Monday to Friday during the morning.

The Cabildo reminds that the meeting will be held in Hermigua, a municipality in the north of La Gomera, and transport will be provided for attendees who need it, upon request when registering. The day will start in the late morning and continue into the afternoon, with a programme that combines shows and free time.

Last year, the meeting brought together over 300 seniors from across the island, and expectations for this edition are equally high. The inclusion of the tribute to women musicians has sparked particular interest, as it recognises a role often overlooked in the musical history of La Gomera.

For those still in doubt, the recommendation is clear: do not miss the chance to experience a festive and recognition-filled day. Senior associations in each municipality are already spreading the call, and the phone keeps ringing. The event is on July 19 in Hermigua; music and joy are guaranteed.
