FEDME has selected 17 runners from ten regional federations to represent Spain at the Skyrunning World Championship, which will take place from September 17 to 20 in La Gomera.

Seventeen Spanish athletes will compete in the 2026 Skyrunning World Championship, which will be held from September 17 to 20 on the island of La Gomera. The selection, announced by FEDME, includes athletes from ten regional federations and will cover the three disciplines of the programme: Vertical Kilometre, Ultra, and Sky Race.

Fourth Time Spain Hosts the Championship

This will be the fourth occasion that Spain hosts this biennial championship, certified by FEDME and the International Skyrunning Federation. La Gomera, a regular venue for the Gomera Paradise Sky Race, will host a competition exclusively for national teams, with a maximum of six athletes per event and country. A total of 27 titles will be awarded over three days.

The team concentrated on the island from July 9 to 12 to adapt to the volcanic and technical terrain that characterises La Gomera. The national coach, Nuria Domínguez, leads a team that combines experience and future potential.

Event Schedule: From Vertical to Sky Race

Friday, September 18 kicks off with the KV SWC, a vertical race of 5 kilometres starting at 9:30 AM (CEST). On Saturday, September 19, at 5:00 AM (CEST), the Ultra SWC will take place, covering 61 kilometres through valleys, hamlets, and peaks of the island. The programme will conclude on Sunday, September 20 with the Sky Race SWC, a 30-kilometre race between Hermigua, El Cedro, Lomo Fragoso, and San Sebastián de La Gomera.

For the residents of La Gomera, the event will mean temporary traffic disruptions in the sections of the races, especially on the GM-1 road between Hermigua and San Sebastián. The island council recommends checking schedules and avoiding unnecessary travel during competition hours.

Claudia Corral and Lluís Puigvert, Headliners

Claudia Corral Hodar is the only female runner selected in two disciplines, Vertical and Sky Race. The FDMESCYL athlete is having her first year in the senior category with a double title as Spanish champion and already has a world medal. Lluís Puigvert arrives as one of the team's major references: he was the Absolute Spanish Champion in Vertical while still a promise and this year became the world champion in the combined event and in Sky Race in Makarska.

In the Ultra category, Pere Aurell (EMF), the current Spanish champion after his victory on April 11 in Riopar, stands out, along with Pau Moreno and Julen Calvó, who placed second and third respectively in that same event. In Sky Race, Ana Granda (FEMPA) arrives after finishing second in the national event on June 27 in El Entrego, and Fabián Venero (FMM) brings his double world title, both absolute and youth.

Spain approaches the world championship as the main favourite after being the most decorated nation in the Soria 2024 edition. The event in the Canary Islands will also mark the first time this championship is held in a Spanish archipelago. Fans will be able to follow the events live on the website of the International Skyrunning Federation.
