The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council begins on Monday, January 13, improvements in road safety at seven points. The first intervention will be on Marrero Torres street, in Ofra-Costa Sur, with an investment of €75,587.

On Monday, January 13, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council launches a plan for improving road safety at seven points in the municipality. The first action will focus on Marrero Torres street, in the Ofra-Costa Sur district, an area particularly busy due to the proximity of CEIP Ágora.

Response to community demands

The mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, has stated that the measure aims to “intensify efforts to ensure the safety of pedestrians in a sensitive area due to the presence of an educational centre.” The Councillor for Mobility, Evelyn Alonso, adds that the works respond to the “demands of residents regarding the risk of accidents.”

The investment amounts to €75,587 and will focus on creating accessible routes, expanding pedestrian areas, and enhancing luminous signage in the school environment. The company in charge is Señalizaciones Villar, with an execution period of one and a half months.

Specific actions on Marrero Torres street

Among the planned interventions, the replacement of pedestrian crossing signs with luminous LED ones stands out, as well as the installation of warning signs for school zones using the same technology. The sidewalks of the existing pedestrian crossings will also be widened.

Additionally, there will be a renewal of the road surface of the entire street and the extension of a new layer of pavement. Horizontal signage will be reinforced with road markings indicating school zone and speed limit. To improve accessibility, tactile pavement will be incorporated at pedestrian crossings.

Local angle: how does it affect residents?

Residents of Ofra-Costa Sur and users of CEIP Ágora will experience partial traffic closures during the works, although the City Council has not specified detours. Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes and pedestrians are urged to exercise caution in the area. The improvement in road safety will particularly benefit schoolchildren and their families, who travel this route daily.

The remaining six points in the municipality will be addressed in a staggered manner once the first intervention is completed. The City Council has not detailed what they will be, but it is expected that they will follow the same pattern of improving pedestrian safety and signage.

For residents, the main novelty will be the reduction of the risk of accidents on a street where poor visibility and high pedestrian traffic have raised concerns. The works, with a period of one and a half months, should be completed by the end of February, barring any setbacks.
