The Cabildo of La Palma has reduced the restricted area of Puerto Naos, allowing bathing in part of Playa Chica following a decrease in CO2 levels. The reopening of a commercial establishment has also been authorised.
The Cabildo of La Palma, through the Advisory Committee of Peinpal, has taken a new step in the recovery of Puerto Naos by reducing the restricted area and allowing the use of part of Playa Chica. This measure comes after confirming a decrease in CO2 concentration in the area, which ensures the safety of bathers, according to the island institution.
The president of the Cabildo, Sergio Rodríguez, highlighted the coordinated work that allows for "constant and firm steps towards restoring normality to this coastal area that is so important for the Valley of Aridane and its recovery." Rodríguez emphasised that "allowing access to the entire beach of Puerto Naos, especially coinciding with the summer season, enables us to gradually continue recovering that normality with the new reality we live with after the eruption of the Tajogaite volcano."
The island president also noted that the reopening is being carried out "with all guarantees thanks to the CO2 project, which allows for real-time monitoring of the gas situation in this area." This monitoring system has been key to assessing the evolution of emissions and making decisions based on objective data.
In addition to the reduction of the restricted area, the Advisory Committee of Peinpal has authorised the reopening of the commercial establishment Palmeras Arepera. The establishment has completed the necessary renovations and will have continuous monitoring of gas levels during its opening hours to ensure the safety of customers and workers.
Currently, there are 1,178 authorised establishments in Puerto Naos, of which 1,020 have the necessary documentation for their return or reopening. In the case of La Bombilla, there are 62 authorised establishments, of which 52 have a signed protocol. These figures reflect the gradual return to normality in areas affected by the Tajogaite eruption.
The Cabildo's decision is a relief for the residents and merchants of the area, who have been waiting for months to recover their activities. The beach of Puerto Naos is a key tourist attraction for the Valley of Aridane, and the possibility of bathing in Playa Chica during the summer is a significant step towards economic reactivation.
Since the volcanic eruption in 2021, Puerto Naos has been subject to restrictions due to CO2 emissions. The monitoring project has allowed for the gradual lifting of limitations, although there are still areas where access remains restricted. The Cabildo will continue to assess the situation to expand safe zones.
For residents and visitors, the recommendation is to respect signage and follow the authorities' instructions. Bathing in Playa Chica is only permitted in the designated area, and monitoring of gas levels continues. The Cabildo insists that safety is the priority.
