Teatro Leal in La Laguna hosts this Thursday, 30th July, the recital 'Islands and Strings' by Benito Cabrera alongside musicians from the Las Palmas Symphony Orchestra, a concert that marks the end of the 2025-2026 season and the II International Campus Ciudad de La Laguna.
The timple player Benito Cabrera and the musicians of the Las Palmas Symphony Orchestra will present the recital 'Islands and Strings' this Thursday, 30th July, at 20:00 hours at Teatro Leal in La Laguna. The concert concludes the 2025-2026 season of the venue and also the cultural programme of the II International Campus Ciudad de La Laguna.
The proposal establishes a dialogue between the sound of the timple and the instruments typical of a string quartet, bridging the gap between Canary Island root music and European musical language. Cabrera, a key figure in contemporary timple music, will perform a selection of pieces that draw on folklore and Canary Island identity to renew the sound of classical chamber music.
The evening will also include a nod to the 18th century with the adaptation of one of the guitar quintets by the Italian composer Luigi Boccherini. The concert will thus combine popular tradition and classical repertoire in a single programme.
Closing the International Campus
The recital will also serve as the grand finale for the II International Campus Ciudad de La Laguna, which has been taking place since last Monday, 27th July, until this Thursday, 30th July. The educational initiative, promoted by the City Council of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, the University of La Laguna, and the CajaCanarias Foundation, brings together internationally renowned figures such as the president of the International Organisation for the Protection of Heritage, Mohamed Joudat, and former Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs Ana Palacio.
The campus is designed as a meeting space to analyse major contemporary challenges such as the revitalisation of democracy and human rights, heritage, global governance, international security, and the challenges of artificial intelligence. The cultural programme complements academic reflection with leisure offerings that help to highlight heritage and diversity.
