The Popular Party of La Palma has condemned the PSOE's vote against an amendment aimed at ensuring that holiday homes destroyed by the 2021 eruption retain their tourist rights. The initiative sought to exempt these properties from the minimum age requirement for new tourist homes.
The Popular Party of La Palma has expressed its discontent after the Socialist Party voted against an amendment presented by the Popular Group in the Parliament of the Canary Islands. The proposal aimed to safeguard the rights of the holiday homes that were devastated by the volcanic eruption of 2021, allowing them to regain their tourist qualification without having to meet the requirements that current regulations impose on new tourist-use homes.
According to the PP of La Palma in a statement, the amendment proposed that those homes registered in the General Tourist Registry of the Canary Islands before being destroyed by the lava flows retain their qualification. This way, they would not have to prove the minimum age that current legislation requires for new holiday homes.
The conservative party reminds that this demand is not new. The PP of La Palma claims to have defended it since the beginning of the regulatory process, highlighting the need to incorporate specific treatment for the reality of the island and, especially, for families who lost their homes and economic activity as a result of the eruption.
The Popular Party believes that the PSOE's vote against represents a missed opportunity to advance in the economic recovery of La Palma and to provide legal certainty to the affected owners. "In addition to rebuilding their homes, they aspire to recover an activity that they were already engaged in with all legal guarantees before the volcano," they state.
Furthermore, the PP regrets that during these months a debate has arisen focused on the authorship of the proposals instead of concentrating efforts on ensuring they progress. "Those affected do not need anyone to claim initiatives; they need solutions," they assert, insisting that the priority must be to respond to the real needs of those who continue to rebuild their life projects.
In this context, the Popular Party calls on all political forces, including the Canary Coalition, to set aside personal interests and work together on a regulatory solution that allows for the repair of this situation. The goal is to ensure that the rights of the affected owners are fully recognised.
The PP of La Palma assures that it will continue to promote the necessary legal modifications to correct this situation. The party will study the most suitable regulatory formulas so that the holiday homes affected by the eruption can recover their activity without being harmed by circumstances beyond their owners' control.
Finally, it urges the Government of the Canary Islands to find a way to incorporate this amendment into a new law, whether through a decree, a new bill, or other legislative means. The PP reminds that it has been advocating for this request since 2024 and believes that now is the time to fulfil commitments to La Palma.
