The Society for the Promotion and Economic and Social Development of the Island (Sodepal) and the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (Plocan) have signed a collaboration protocol in Tazacorte to position La Palma as a reference in blue economy, marine innovation, and sustainability.
The agreement, signed by the Councillor for Economic Promotion and CEO of Sodepal, Miriam Perestelo, and the director of Plocan, Joaquín Hernández, establishes a framework for cooperation to develop pilot projects, training, and business support linked to the island's marine resources. The signing took place in the municipality of Tazacorte, on the west coast of La Palma.
A commitment to economic diversification
Perestelo emphasised that the blue economy represents a key niche for the economic diversification of La Palma, as the island has suitable environmental and scientific conditions to attract investment and talent. The councillor highlighted that this alliance will
For his part, Hernández highlighted the role of Plocan as a Singular Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS), capable of providing advanced technological solutions in ocean observation and marine technology testing. The entity has a strong connection with international research and innovation networks in the marine and maritime fields.
Specific lines of action
The protocol includes exploring lines of action that involve ocean observation trials, robotics, digitalisation, and artificial intelligence applied to the study of the sea. It also foresees the creation of training, incubation, and acceleration programmes for start-ups linked to the blue economy.
Additionally, professional updating and specialisation programmes in the maritime and technological sectors will be promoted, as well as environmental solutions along the coast, optimisation of resource use, and promotion of marine renewable energies. Another goal is to bring ocean culture closer to citizens through events and enhance the island's appeal for citizen science and sustainable tourism projects.
Next steps and funding
As this is a general action protocol, the specific projects identified in the coming months will be implemented through specific agreements and collaboration agreements. These will define the funding, timelines, and technical resources that each entity will contribute to realise the initiatives on Palmero territory.
For the residents of La Palma, this alliance represents an opportunity to access specialised training and jobs linked to the sea, a sector that has historically been an economic driver of the island. The collaboration between Sodepal and Plocan aims for the blue economy to be not just a concept, but a tangible reality that generates wealth and sustainability.
The agreement is part of the island's strategy to recover its productive fabric after the volcanic eruption of 2021, focusing on innovative and environmentally friendly sectors. The coast of Tazacorte, where the protocol was signed, is an example of the marine resources that are intended to be valued.
