The VOX councillors in Arrecife, Eugenio Hernández and Enrique Barrios, have presented a motion for the council to demand urgent intervention from the Cabildo on the LZ-14 road, at the height of the Altavista Industrial Estate, with roundabouts or a dual carriageway to alleviate traffic.
VOX's proposal in the Arrecife council aims to put an end to the chronic traffic jams that drivers face daily when accessing the Altavista Industrial Estate. Councillors Eugenio Hernández and Enrique Barrios have submitted a motion for the upcoming municipal plenary session urging the local government to urgently request a renovation project for the LZ-14 from the Cabildo of Lanzarote. The solution they propose involves constructing roundabouts or dualing the road, a measure they consider simple but which, they claim, has been left unexecuted for years.
A problem that repeats daily
According to the councillors, the situation in the area is unsustainable. Every working day, hundreds of vehicles pile up at the junction leading to the estate, the road to Castillo de San José, and the marina. The queues, which sometimes stretch for miles, force drivers to self-organise to navigate, due to the lack of adequate infrastructure.
“The politicians governing the council and the Cabildo never pass through there,” Hernández states in a press release. “If they did, they would see that it is unbearable.” The VOX spokesperson criticises that, despite the increase in the number of vehicles and the lack of effective public transport policies, no action has been taken at a strategic point for the capital's mobility.
Economic and social impact
The motion also highlights the economic harm suffered by businesses in the Altavista Industrial Estate. Many customers and workers avoid the area for fear of wasting time in traffic jams, which affects commercial and industrial activity. This is compounded by the traffic generated by the port of Los Mármoles and the cruise ships heading to the marina, which multiplies congestion at certain times.
“These are very important centres for the daily work of many people, who are losing time and money,” insists Hernández. The political party believes that the council must demand from the Cabildo, as the responsible authority for the road, immediate intervention, and ensure that the project does not fall into oblivion. “It has been done in other areas and it has worked well. Why not here?” the councillor questions.
A historical demand
The improvement of access to Altavista is not a new demand. Various representatives of the Cabildo have previously announced their intention to act on the LZ-14, but the projects have never materialised. VOX hopes that this motion will serve to accelerate timelines and that, this time, the solution does not remain just an announcement. The proposal will be debated in the next municipal plenary session, and if approved, the council must urgently convey the request to the Cabildo.
For the residents of Arrecife and the workers in the area, the measure is long-awaited. In the meantime, the Civil Guard occasionally comes to regulate traffic from the Los Mármoles roundabout, a solution that VOX considers insufficient. “How hard could it have been to build a couple of roundabouts or a dual carriageway there?” Hernández questions, reflecting the frustration of many drivers.
