The initiative, driven by the Insular Service of Historical Heritage, begins with a wide selection of audiovisual interviews conducted in various municipalities.
The website, accessible at surcandolamemoria.es, rescues experiences related to fishing, agriculture, customs, popular architecture, and traditional trades. According to the insular president and councillor for Historical Heritage, Oswaldo Betancort, the project aims to protect these memories so they are not lost. “The memory of a people lives in the individuals who have transmitted their understanding of this land. With this initiative, we are taking a firm step to preserve this legacy,” he stated.
Betancort highlighted that these narratives allow for an understanding of the social evolution of both islands through their true protagonists. The platform is open to the public, researchers, and educational institutions, and facilitates the search for content through simple filters by themes or municipalities.
Additionally, the initiative invites local residents to propose new interviews or contribute historical documents to expand the archive. Anyone can consult this documentary fund for free on the official website, which will continue to incorporate new stories to establish itself as the major archive of oral memory in the Canary Islands.
