The French team Paprec adds eight points and leads Sled by two after the two races held this Wednesday in Marina Rubicón, on a day marked by strong winds and breakages.
The Paprec team has consolidated its lead in the Marina Rubicón Lanzarote 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week after an intense day of competition this Wednesday. With winds nearing 20 knots and waves that tested the vessels, the TP52 fleet completed two races off the coast of Marina Rubicón, in the south of Lanzarote.
The French boat now has eight points in the provisional standings, two more than Sled, which occupies second place with ten. Alpha+, with 15 points, has climbed to third position after achieving the best performance of the day, with two second places.
The first race was marked by the absence of Gladiator, which had to withdraw due to a breakage in the forestay. Provezza and Platoon Aviation alternated at the front, but a strong current and problems with Provezza's spinnaker allowed Paprec to take the lead and not relinquish it until the finish line, achieving its second consecutive victory in the competition. Alpha+ and Alkedo Vitamina completed the podium of the race.
In the second race, the wind stabilised above 20 knots. Platoon Aviation and Paprec had a very close start, but a new spinnaker breakage in Platoon Aviation — the third in two days — allowed a good part of the fleet to overtake it. Sled seized the opportunity to take the lead and secure its second partial victory in Lanzarote. Alpha+ was again second, while Alkedo Vitamina climbed from the last position at the start to complete the podium.
Stephane Neve, project director of Paprec, positively assessed the day: "It has been a great day for the team. We had a fantastic first race and in the second we managed to recover thanks to our speed downwind."
For his part, Francesco Bruni, tactician of Sled, acknowledged that they lost some points in the first race, although he expressed satisfaction with the subsequent victory: "The second race was much better, with a good start and a good strategy."
The Spanish sailor Pedro Mas, bowman of Alpha+, highlighted the importance of sailing conservatively in such demanding conditions: "If you take risks and it goes wrong, you end up last. The team is doing a great job and we are avoiding problems with the equipment."
The day also saw the inclusion of Canarian Carlos Hernández in the Vayu team, replacing Mika Eid, who was absent for health reasons. Hernández, who raises the number of Spanish sailors in the competition to 12, highlighted the high level of the fleet: "There are many teams, the level is higher and any small detail can set you back." Vayu finished the day with an eleventh and a fifth place, occupying eighth position provisionally.
The competition will continue this Thursday with two new races starting at 11:30, which can be followed live through the official platforms of the 52 SUPER SERIES, with broadcasts in Spanish and English.
