The fifth edition of the Sculpture Campus of Lanzarote brings together students from the University of La Laguna in San Bartolomé from July 19 to 26.
The fifth edition of the Sculpture Campus of Lanzarote kicked off this Wednesday in San Bartolomé, with the participation of students from the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Degree in Journalism at the University of La Laguna (ULL). The initiative, organised by the Curbelo Santana Foundation in collaboration with ULL and the San Bartolomé City Council, runs until July 26 at the Lanzarote Art Center.
During a week of artistic residency, participants combine theoretical training, research, and creative practice. The programme includes talks by specialists, field trips to various locations on the island, and a workshop on sculptural intervention in the territory, mentored by artists and specialised faculty.
The mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, emphasised that the campus reinforces the municipal commitment to culture, education, and artistic creation. “Hosting initiatives like this allows young talents to experience our territory from an artistic perspective and helps to project the municipality as a cultural reference both on and off the island,” he stated.
The councillor for Culture and Seniors, Carmen Medina, highlighted the participation and exchange of experiences among students, artists, and the community: “Culture is a fundamental tool to enrich the lives of our residents, and this Campus represents an opportunity for San Bartolomé to continue growing as a space open to creativity.”
The Sculpture Campus aims to promote artistic experimentation, boost collaborative projects, and deepen the relationship between art and nature. The organisation has noted that the island's landscape becomes a source of inspiration for the works created during the residency.
As a closing event for the fifth edition, the programme will include an institutional presentation and an open day for the public to learn about the creative processes and the works produced. The initiative solidifies San Bartolomé as a space for creation, education, and dissemination of contemporary culture in Lanzarote.
ULL students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a real environment, with the support of established artists. The experience seeks to bridge the gap between academic training and professional practice in the field of sculpture and contemporary art.
The San Bartolomé City Council has expressed its satisfaction in hosting this campus for the fifth consecutive year. “The landscape and heritage of our municipality provide a particularly suitable framework for the development of new artistic proposals,” the mayor added.
The open day, scheduled for the last day, will allow residents and visitors to interact with the artists and see firsthand the works created during the week. The campus has become an unmissable event for art lovers on the island.
