Club La Santa has announced the creation of the Volcano Triathlon Half, which will debut on April 24, 2027, in Lanzarote with 1.9 km of swimming, 90 km of cycling, and a half marathon.
Club La Santa has expanded its sports offerings in Lanzarote with the creation of the Volcano Triathlon Half, a middle-distance event that will debut on April 24, 2027. The new event joins the traditional Volcano Triathlon, which will celebrate its 43rd edition this year on March 20, and will also include a sprint category for the first time.
The Volcano Triathlon Half will consist of 1.9 kilometers of swimming in the saltwater lagoon of La Santa, 90 kilometers of cycling through volcanic landscapes, and a final half marathon on foot. With this addition, the organization is reintroducing a distance that has not been contested on the island since 2023.
Registrations for the three categories (olympic, sprint, and half) will open on August 20. During the first week, a reduced fee will be in effect, and special prices will be permanently maintained for residents of the Canary Islands.
The decision to add a middle-distance event responds to a consolidated trend in international triathlon: diversifying formats to attract a broader audience, from elite athletes to amateur sportspeople seeking demanding yet more accessible challenges than the full distance. In terms of scheduling, the combination of Olympic, sprint, and half allows for an expanded participation base and strengthens the tourist-sport profile of the destination.
Club La Santa, with the support of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Lanzarote Tourism, Lanzarote Sports Destination, and the Government of the Canary Islands, as well as the collaboration of the municipalities of Teguise, Haría, and Tinajo, is thus promoting active tourism and sports practice on the island through internationally projected competitions.
The Volcano Triathlon, considered the longest-running international competition in Spain, thus reinforces its role as an emblematic event on the Canary calendar. The reintroduction of the middle distance and the addition of the sprint reflect a shift in focus: from a single major event to a more flexible ecosystem of races designed to sustain competitive and tourist interest over a longer period.
Lanzarote, with its volcanic geography and established brand in endurance sports, offers ideal conditions to capitalise on this trend. If the response from athletes is positive, the new Volcano Triathlon Half could establish itself as a gateway to the flagship competition and strengthen the island's positioning as a training and international events destination throughout the year.
Interested parties can register starting August 20. More information is available on the Club La Santa website.
