Hugo Pérez and Sara Rivas triumph in the La Santa Popular Mile, held this weekend as part of the Virgen del Carmen festivities.
The La Santa Popular Mile, one of the most anticipated sporting events on the Tinajo calendar, now has its podium winners for the 2026 edition. Hugo Pérez claimed victory in the men's category with a time of 5 minutes and 2 seconds, followed by Aray Gutiérrez (5:36) and Marc Baker (5:46). In the women's category, Sara Rivas took first place with 6:34, ahead of Lucía Cabello (6:48) and Mónica García (6:49).
Festive atmosphere and children's participation
The event, part of the Tinajo Popular Races Cup, took place on an urban route through the coastal village. The atmosphere was unbeatable, with locals cheering from the sidewalks and sunshine accompanying throughout the morning. Before the adult race, the youngest participants took their turn in the mini version, a colourful event that drew applause from parents and attendees.
The mayor of Tinajo, Jesús Machín, did not hide his satisfaction:
“The La Santa Mile continues to please. In all the municipality's festivities, sports activities stand out more each year, and La Santa is a good example. Congratulations to everyone and keep enjoying.”Meanwhile, the sports councillor, Vianney Rodríguez, highlighted the atmosphere:
“The atmosphere in the streets was spectacular. We are very pleased with the development of this mile, which continues to grow year after year.”
A tradition that grows on the Tinajo coast
The La Santa Popular Mile has established itself as a classic within the Virgen del Carmen festivities, which fill this coastal enclave with life every July. The event not only promotes grassroots sports but also strengthens the social fabric of the municipality. For locals, it is an opportunity to see their fellow townspeople compete in a festive and family-friendly environment.
The Tinajo Town Hall values the growth of this race, which attracts both local runners and participants from other parts of the island. The inclusion of the children's race is key to promoting healthy habits from an early age. The youngest participants, with their short-distance races, become the stars of a day that combines sport, tradition, and community.
The organisation is already working on the next edition, aiming to maintain participation levels and continue improving the experience. For now, the winners take home the pride and applause of their community, and the village of La Santa demonstrates that popular sports are increasingly finding a place in its calendar.
