El Rosario now has new representatives for its festivities. Lyria Hernández and Diego Ramos were proclaimed Romera and Romero Mayor at a gala that paid tribute to La Gomera as the guest island.
The hopeful Lyria Hernández, representing Camino Azocas and sponsored by Atlántico Autocentros, and Diego Ramos, representing Majada las Vacas with sponsorship from Dorajero SL, were proclaimed last night as Romera and Romero Mayor of the Fiestas de La Esperanza. The event, held in the Tenerife municipality of El Rosario, combined music, emotion, and a strong institutional component.
The gala began with a performance by the Club Batistana Tenerife, which recreated the offering of the Ramo de Arure, and continued with traditional sounds from La Gomera: chácaras, drums, the silbo gomero, and a review of the historic orchestras from the Colombian island, such as Los Bajip, la Gomeray, Rokecan, and Wamanpy, in an 'all-stars' style number.
The mayor of El Rosario, Escolástico Gil, was responsible for presenting the bands to the new representatives. He was accompanied on stage by authorities such as the president of the Cabildo de La Gomera and deputy Casimiro Curbelo; the president of the Canary Federation of Municipalities (Fecam) and mayor of Candelaria, María Concepción Brito; the mayor of Agulo, Rosa María Chinea; and the mayor of Valle Gran Rey, Borja Barroso, among others.
One of the most emotional moments was the exchange of institutional gifts. Gil presented Curbelo with a esperanza blanket as a symbol of brotherhood, while the Gomera leader reciprocated with an institutional painting. The Association of the Ramo de Arure and the mayor of Valle Gran Rey also gifted the first mayor of El Rosario.
The gala was entirely dedicated to La Gomera, highlighting its cultural, musical, and ethnographic heritage. Performances were given by the Cultural Association Silbo Gomero, the Choirs and Dances of La Gomera, and the Ramo de Arure group, along with the palm comedian Petite Lorena. The audience also enjoyed a show that recognised the contribution of Gomera orchestras to popular Canarian music.
The event was hosted by journalists Puchi Méndez and Lorenzo de Vera, in a gala sponsored once again by the company Egatesa. Before the proclamation, all candidates were distinguished as ladies and gentlemen of honour, in an event that included the first deputy mayor, Fátima Gutiérrez, and the councillor for festivities, Yeray Gutiérrez.
Subsequently, the outgoing Romera and Romero Mayor, Luana Isabel Peixoto and Alfredo Rocío, handed over the staffs that symbolise both titles, marking the transition. This edition reinstated, after two years, the participation of male candidates alongside female aspirants, consolidating the inclusive model established several years ago.
The evening also served to strengthen the historical and cultural ties between El Rosario and La Gomera, the guest island of honour in the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Romería de La Esperanza. The new Romera and Romero Mayor will represent the municipality during the upcoming year in the festive events.
