Nine Optimist class sailors from the Goodbow Isora Sports Club have participated in a training activity at the FIVT-DXT Training School, led by the experienced coach Luis Miguel Hernández Tirado ‘Wichy’. The initiative, funded by DXTenerife, took place over three days at the club's facilities and the coasts of Playa San Juan.
The Goodbow Isora Sports Club has been the venue for a new edition of the FIVT-DXT Training School, aimed at Optimist class sailors. Between Monday, July 20, and Wednesday, July 22, nine young athletes from the club, accompanied by their coaches, took part in intensive training in preparation for the 2026/2027 season.
The activity was conducted by Luis Miguel Hernández Tirado, known in the sailing world as ‘Wichy’, a coach with extensive experience who has successfully conveyed the basic fundamentals of competition. The training, funded by DXTenerife, adds to previous training sessions held in Murcia and at the Real Club Náutico de Tenerife, all promoted by the Insular Sailing Federation of Tenerife (FIVT) and supported by the Insular Council.
During the sessions, participants worked on key aspects such as steering, sail trimming, rigging, and positions within the boat. “We have focused a lot on steering, trimming, rigging, and positions within the boat, which are the foundation for competing well. We also covered rules. It has been three very productive days,” explained Wichy.
The coach highlighted the attitude of the group, made up of novice sailors eager to learn. “It has been a pleasure to share these days with this group of sailors, who are novices but very keen, which is the most important thing,” he stated. He also emphasized the importance of such initiatives: “These types of activities are important because they offer new perspectives, both for the sailors and the coaches. It is complementary work to the day-to-day activities in the clubs.”
Wichy also thanked the FIVT for the trust placed in him to carry out these training tasks on the island. For his part, José María Ciudad, president of CD Goodbow Isora, positively assessed the experience. “These types of activities represent a significant contribution to our team. It has been three days of a lot of theory, coming from a coach like Wichy, who has great experience. The information provided has been important. We will try to make the most of these teachings for the future,” he noted.
The club president stressed that the training has been a unique opportunity for both sailors and coaches to enhance their skills for the upcoming season. “This activity with Wichy has meant a great opportunity for us to improve our skills, both sailors and coaches, for the next season. It is important to take advantage of the summer for days like this,” he concluded.
The FIVT-DXT Training School thus consolidates itself as a key programme for the development of sailing in Tenerife, offering young talents the chance to improve their technical and competitive levels.
