La Laguna Tenerife announced on Monday the return of Kyle Guy, the American guard who previously wore the aurinegro colours in the second half of the 23/24 season. He signs for the next two campaigns.

The La Laguna Tenerife has once again made a move in the Basketball Champions League market. The aurinegro club confirmed on Monday the return of Kyle Guy, a 1.88-metre American guard who already wore the lagunera jersey in the second half of the 23/24 season. Guy signs for two seasons, until 2028, according to an official statement from the club.

The 27-year-old player arrives from a journey that included the NBA, the G-League, the Chinese league, and the FIBA 3x3 circuit. In his previous stint in Tenerife, he averaged 14.7 points and 2.1 assists in the ACB, and 21.5 points in the BCL, being a key player in the continental championship runner-up and in reaching the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey.

A luxury reinforcement for the perimeter

The aurinegra management has highlighted that Guy was a "significant part" of the team's achievements in 23/24. His return strengthens the perimeter of a squad that aims to compete for the top spots in the Liga Endesa and to challenge in Europe. The guard, trained at the University of Virginia — where he was NCAA champion and tournament MVP in 2019 — has accumulated experience at the elite level: 53 games in the NBA between the Sacramento Kings and Miami Heat, as well as a stint with Joventut de Badalona and Panathinaikos.

For the lagunero fans, Guy's return means regaining a player with scoring ability and character. In his 19 ACB games with Tenerife, he showcased flashes of quality, such as that decisive three-pointer against Barcelona. Now, with a longer contract, he is expected to adapt immediately and lead the attack from the shooting guard position.

A break as a coach and return to the courts

After his first stint on the island, Guy decided to take a break as a player to serve as an assistant coach with the University of Virginia Cavaliers. However, the call of competition was stronger, and last year he returned to the courts with the Noblesville Boom of the G-League, affiliated with the Indiana Pacers. He also played in the Chinese league with the Shanxi Loongs and represented the senior United States national team in FIBA windows.

The announcement of the signing has gone viral on social media with a video in which his compatriot Tim Abromaitis answers a phone in Santiago Martín, and Guy says to him: "Tim. Good news: I'm back." The club wanted to add a touch of humour to the return, which excites a fanbase that chanted his name two seasons ago.

Kyle Guy will join La Laguna Tenerife's pre-season at the end of August, pending the official confirmation of his registration in the ACB. The lagunero team is finalising the details of the squad for a season in which they will seek to improve on the sixth place achieved in the regular phase in 2024.
