The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council is submitting for public information the license for the first recreational boatyard on the Island, a strategic project with an investment of €7.7 million and 30 expected jobs.
The first boatyard specialised in the construction of recreational and sports vessels in Tenerife will become a reality in the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The Urban Planning Management of the chicharrero City Council has initiated the public information period for the license application submitted by Wencoe Astilleros Canarios, a project declared of strategic interest by the Government of the Canary Islands.
The plot where the boatyard will be built, number 70 of the new fill in the Fishing Dock, has an area of 20,306 square metres, equivalent to almost three football fields. This pioneering initiative on the Island introduces an industrial activity based on advanced technologies that have not yet been implemented in this sector in the Canary Islands.
Investment of €7.7 million and 30 qualified jobs
The Wencoe Astilleros Canarios project includes an initial investment of €7.7 million, with an execution period of 24 months. The administrative concession granted by the Port Authority extends for 40 years. According to the Government of the Canary Islands, around thirty qualified technical jobs will be generated, fostering regional specialisation in the field of recreational shipbuilding.
The boatyard will be energy self-sufficient, with 100% renewable generation. The regional government highlights that energy efficiency systems will be used, resulting in emission savings compared to conventional projects, with a low environmental impact.
An automated and sustainable industrial complex
Wencoe plans to create a modern and highly automated industrial complex that will integrate design, manufacturing, and assembly of recreational and sports vessels. The company will incorporate advanced automation technologies, robotics, and composite materials to enhance productive efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The boatyard will have the capacity for mass production, allowing it to meet the demand from other brands or shipyards.
This is a 100% sustainable nautical leisure boatyard through renewable generation, based on advanced manufacturing technologies for the semi-automated construction of recreational and sports vessels, with the possibility of mass production for demand from other brands or shipyards and with staff possessing specialised qualifications, according to the Government of the Canary Islands.
The project is part of a package of 36 initiatives declared Strategic for the Canary Islands, with which the government seeks to diversify the Archipelago's economy, create an R&D+i ecosystem, and offer new opportunities to technological SMEs. Strategic projects enjoy reduced administrative timelines and priority access to funding lines, especially European funds.
Those interested in the file can present themselves and submit objections during the next 20 working days, as reported by the Urban Planning Management. It is estimated that construction could begin before the end of 2026 if the projected timelines are met.
For the residents of Santa Cruz, the boatyard represents a commitment to economic diversification beyond traditional tourism, with stable and qualified employment. Additionally, the location in the Fishing Dock will revitalise a port area in transformation, where other investments have already been announced.
