On Saturday, July 25, at 12:30 and 20:00 hours, the Muelle Chico and Plaza Patricio Calero in Corralejo will host the XXI International Meeting of Improvisers, featuring musicians and poets from the Canary Islands, Cuba, and other regions.
The Old Town of Corralejo will once again be the stage for rhymes and improvisation this Saturday, July 25, with the celebration of the XXI International Meeting of Improvisers. Organised by the Ocho Sílabas Foundation and the collective La Razón de un Pueblo, the event is supported by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the Town Hall of La Oliva.
The day will kick off at 12:30 hours at Muelle Chico and continue at 20:00 hours at Plaza Patricio Calero. Renowned poets from the Canary Islands and internationally will participate, including Cuban poet Alexis Díaz Pimienta, accompanied by his compatriots Ana Marys Gil and singer Marisol Guillama, who is visiting Corralejo for the first time.
The mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, highlighted the importance of this cultural event: "Once again we celebrate a new edition of this cultural event that fights for the visibility of the Old Town through improvisation and rhymes. We invite everyone to come and enjoy this unique gathering that remembers the struggle of our people."
The Culture Councillor of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Rayco León, expressed gratitude that culture serves as a vehicle to give visibility to the community's claims regarding the Old Town, a cause that has judicial backing. Also present at the presentation were the Councillor for Festivities, Omaira Saavedra, and the spokesperson for the Popular Party in the island corporation, Claudio Gutiérrez.
Gregorio Benítez and Miguel Socorro, representing the Collective of Affected Residents of the Old Town of Corralejo, thanked the institutions and improvisers for their continued support. "A year ago we celebrated two decades of the International Meeting of Improvisers, and here we are again, with the same enthusiasm and an unalterable commitment in favour of the rights and customs of the historical inhabitants of the Old Town of Corralejo," they stated.
One of the new features of this edition is the participation of the Clotilde Cruz Peña Verse School, made up of students from the senior programmes at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC). Alongside them, the majorero poets Luis Carballo, Domingo Umpiérrez El Cuco, and Marcos Hormiga will represent Fuerteventura, accompanied by the humour and voice of Guillermo González.
From El Hierro, Juan Luis Barrera and Carmelo Padrón will arrive, while from Gran Canaria, Sonia Pérez and José María Dávila will perform, with the latter also serving as master of ceremonies. Musicians Jorge Mendoza and Eduardo Hernández (Tenerife), Laura Martel (Gran Canaria), and palmero Fernando García complete the lineup.
The meeting, which has surpassed twenty editions, has established itself as an unmissable event for lovers of improvised poetry and traditional music. Admission is free, and a high turnout of local and visiting audiences is expected.
